As said above - doing parkrun every week made a massive difference to my pace.
Another vote here for Parkrun every week. Managed to get my first 5k PB down from 25:45 to my current 21:47 over 7 or so months.

You can race it every week with very little to no ill effect to yourself and allows you to practice and experiement with different tactics and strategies etc. Also preps you for running with a larger group of people, something we runners usually don't do in our training.

Yeah that's the great thing about Parkrun, you can try a different strategy and if it doesn't work it doesn't matter, you don't have to pay to enter or anything so you've lost nothing and gained a lesson. Just try again next week and go for something else.

That's some good progress there Cybertronian.

I also a big fan of ParkRun having done it 40 times out of the last 45 weeks. No PB in 32 weeks though

Thanks Locke. It's been hardwork but it's so rewarding to see I'm facing off against different people as I progress. I feel I've yet to plateau and am furiously working to get closer to 20 minutes.

I really should volunteer more often at my local one though.

I'm defecting to the Newport one this weekend since I'm in Wales. Will be good to change scenery and terrain, I think.

Does anyone know where I can get some (reasonably priced) longer leg running tights?

It was blooming freezing this morning and the mist/rain being driven against my legs was quite unpleasant.

I am 6'5'' and can't find any long enough, without buying XXL which are like clown pants and wont stay up (despite me being a bit of a fatty). Need some with a 35" inside leg and a 34/35 waist.

Try Aldi and Lidl. I know Aldi had running compression tops in last week.

Do Cardiff if you want a fast time. It's dead flat basically.

I'm tempted, Ross, though it's a bit more of a ballache to drive into Cardiff. I'm not very far from Newport however.

It's a good course for a fast time, a few from my old club do it regularly. I think the Newport one is a bit more hilly though I've never done it.

Either way, good luck. Are you going for a pb or just to get a 5k in?

I'm aiming to PB. I'm riding the half marathon PB high and hopefully can come close to 21:30. I'll give Cardiff some thought...

Anyone running the Fleet (Hampshire) 10k this Sunday? ~43min to beat last years time which I should do based on recent parkruns.

Calves are aching now (one a lot more than the other for some reason) after switching to minimalist running shoes this week but I suppose this is to be expected, I probably should have started using them a bit more gradually. May have to give ParkRun a miss this Saturday now but it's about time I volunteered anyway. The funny thing is I've never had any bad aches/injuries in nearly a year of running now and I switched to minimalist shoes to avoid getting any hehe
I'll persevere with them for a few more week yet...

Not happy, it's meant to be very windy for great south run now frown

Have faith, Ross - a lot can change in 48 hours.

I was expecting heavy rain and 14mph gusts of wind for my half last weekend. Turned into perfect PB running weather.

An update on leggings for taller people, in case anyone is interested!

I went to my local running shop and they recommended Asics leggings as they generally come up long than the other brands. I bought a pair of Asics hermes and they are great. needed them this morning as it was pretty chilly.

Putting in for my first 10k in a while. -Aberystwyth in December. Nice and flat apparently. Nowhere near as fit as I used to be so will just enjoy it and try to get as close as possible to 50 mins.

Have you got any more info on this race? I used to study in Aberystwyth and would happily make a weekend of it to visit some of my old haunts and race.

Just did my first ever 10 miles tonight. Dark, wet, cold, raining, wintery showers and a head torch.

Never thought I'd be saying that on a Friday night 11 months ago at the age of 41.

Ross, I should've listened to you! Newport was tough, much more like a trail run than a flat race. Went over gravel, mud, grass, bark and sand that had been laid out to cover some of the super muddy sections.

Having said that, I still managed to PB with a 21:37 finish in 28th out of 197. I reckon I'd have been nearer to 21:25 at my home Parkrun, so that's the target for next week.
