Morning

I'm going to run to and from work tomorrow. Each way is 8.5miles.

What should I be thinking of eating during the day to replaced lost energy in the morning and increase energy levels for the evening run?

Or would a cheese sandwich and a pack of cheese & onion be suffice?!

My advice would be to make sure you've got plenty of healthy snacks on hand - I get really hungry and the machine of sin calls to me, with her luscious looking Mars and Kit Kat contents. Especially something you can eat right away. Work often leaps on you as soon as you're in and you can find 40 minutes go by before you've taken a breath and actually eaten something.

Opinions on the Inov8 X-Talon 212 please? I know Ross rates the X-Talons but is it that model or another? What's the difference between the normal shoes and the "precision fit" shoes (width I guess)?

I could do with replacing my old knackered fell shoes and have a £50 voucher for Wiggle...
I'm on my second pair of the 212s. Highly recommended - superb grip on the trails. The precision fit are a snug fit on me thus prevent any movement inside the shoe which is perfect for me. I have tried other brands but none match up to the X-Talons. I use them for OCR and regular trail running. You wouldn't want to use them too much on tarmac as they will wear the sole.

Bananas if you like/can stomach them. Absolutely perfect for after the run in and before the run home, but give yourself enough time for it to go down properly.

Not quite the same as running, but When I cycle in to work (26km, or more, each way, mixed terrain), I eat something light like an oat biscuit before and a banana and some toast when I arrive. I drink lots of water and 2-3 cups of tea through the day. I Eat a substantial lunch and a banana 45 minutes or so before riding home.

Without the afternoon banana, I can feel a bit lacking in energy.

Sounds good. Just need to work out what size I am now... My current (very old) pair of Inov8's claim to be UK11 but I usually take a UK10, so I guess a trip to a running shop is needed. Normally I wouldn't then buy online as that's a little cheeky IMO but I've got a voucher to spend.

For me they are a true fit, thus I got my regular size. There's no harm in ordering two sizes and returning one. If you choose the 'click & collect' service, I think you can simply return to the collection point for free.

I'm in town tomorrow anyway so it's no trouble to go and try a pair on. Good to know on the returns though.

You're lucky you have a stockists nearby. I have been unable to find a local stockist in my area.

PS - my wife has got the mud claws. Probably a bit more grippy off trail but you won't want any tarmac at all on these.

I think my current pair are an old version of Mudclaws and are definitely squirmy on tarmac. I've got some excellent mixed surface shoes already (Brooks PureGrit). I like the low drop, low weight of the X-Talons, I think they'll suit my purposes well.

Another odd week for me. Managed to knock 6 minutes off a 10.6k on Monday and then couldn't go running on Wednesday after a stomach/oyster disagreement. Went out this afternoon and it was the first run that didn't require a headband, tights and gloves since November. Did 13.2k in 72 minutes which is 4 minutes quicker than my previous best.

Taking streching time into account, I'm running 5,14 per km which I'm quite happy with and I felt like I could have kept that going for a few kilometres more. 3 weeks until race day.

I deployed my heart rate monitor last night and got the max rate up to 189, is this good, bad or indifferent. I'm 41. Resting is 58.

Indifferent as a single data point. With lots of data you may be able to see trends in max heart rate, resting rate, recovery time etc which can be early indicators of illness (raised resting rate, increased recovery time etc).

I've always found HR data needs to be all or nothing. I can't be bothered with it, so it's nothing for me.

I've got a set-they're awesome. I've mostly used them on grass sessions so I don't have to spike up and on short wet grass that'd be lethal even in spikes they feel rock solid.

I'm considering setting up a small training group. Once a week, do some reps and distance up to about 5k, free. I don't have any qualifications for this, I'd just do the session I was going to do and invite other people to join in.

It all sounded straightforward, but then I though about insurance, is it risky organising this, if someone falls over is there much risk that I get sued? (I'm in the UK BTW)

I go sometimes to a similar group, if I tripped up or had a heart attack I'd take responsibility and not sue the guy who very kindly organises it for no personal gain, if I wasn't with the group I'd be doing it on my own and would be safer with a group than alone - someone will know some first aid and will phone 999 so help will be there faster than if I'm on my own.

Look at the RunEngland website and their "Group Leader" plans. IMO you should be alright if you're not charging your group to attend but then I'm not a lawyer...

Tempo run for me today. Unfortunately I was less than restrained socialising last night so drank too much wine and stayed up far too late. That made the run harder and slower than I wanted but never mind, still grabbed a few Strava CRs. Bath Half in 2 weeks...
