Absolutely over the moon with a 4.35.25 time at the Farnham Pilgrim marathon. My first off road race and some horrific hills especially a 100m climb over 1.2km on sand. Tank was empty at the end and knees destroyed but loved it.

Well done. Seems today is a good news day for PH runners!

My dads 52.
In the past 4 months he has lost 4 stone and a bit running daily and in the past 2 months he is running twice a day. Once at 2:30 and then 21:00.
He has missed maybe 3 or 4 days in them 4 months.
He's upto running 6 miles at 2:30 and 3 miles at 21:00 now and showing no fatigue and tiredness.

Can this hurt him in the long run? (hehe)
I said he might need a rest every now and then for rest but he thinks he is a bionic man now. I don't know best but I thought a rest once a week would do him good?
Cheeky fecker - he's 52 not 152! You'd be surprised at what us wrinklies can get up to! wink

Def rest a part of training (and increasingly in age, all joking aside - it just takes your body a wee bit longer to repair/restore, especially if you pick up an injury - better to start at 80% fitness than 80% health...).
He's running fairly short and fast - maybe his strengths will evolve to longer distance (stamina seems to come easier with a bit of ageing) but either way good on him, especially if he's enjoying it.

Well done Ewan, that's fantastic!
Thanks for the reply Andy. I'm not saying he's old hehe I'll let him know that a rest sometime will do him good, he's heavily addicted so is loving getting outside and pounding the pavement right now smile

I'm 58 and find I need rest days, but it depends on the individual and how hard you're going when you run - when I do a club training session 2x5k or 3x1k plus 1x3k I need at least one day off to recover and if I do that on Thursday I can still feel it on Saturday at parkrun but there are much older people than me run more often then I do.

Well done. Think I met you, did you tell me that you had been a cyclist for a number of years?

Marathon #38 for me at pilgrims today. First time I had done it and was really pleased with the support from the marshals and drink stations. All the intersections were marked and a marshal guiding people the correct way!

Started too slow and wasn't focused enough in the first half. Started taking to many brreaks for biscuits and drinks. However had a word with myself and got it all going in the second half. Must have overtaken 30/40 people even with someone racing me on the last mile who I had passed earlier.

4:11. The 11 mins were for the breaks, still should be good prep for hopefully a pb sometime soon.

Not me I'm afraid. Agreed that the marshalling was good though. The climb up St Martha's hill did me in though.

4.11 is a good time though, congrats.

It certainly was, especially Ewans result, very special.

Well done everyone, Cross country 10k today with a big hill. My target was 50 mins as I'm a fatty at the mo and we have not done many longer runs lately came in at 49.40 after being massively held up at the start.
Guy I run with won it in about 32.50! 2nd place was 39.something.
Got myself signed up for 2 technical and twisty 5k races next weekend so will see how they go.

6th place and 3rd Brit at the World Masters Mountain Running Championships V35 race. Happy with that!
Just had a message confirming the team victory and a World Gold medal making its way to me. woohoo
Brilliant effirt -well done

Make sure you post a picture when you get it.

I had 20 miles under my belt by 10:30 yesterday morning inckuding running with my 6 year old to a new parkrun PB.

Hoping to cheer my wife on to a first sub-60 10km this morning.
A good day yesterday - my wife went under 60 minutes for a 10k for the first time - 58:13. I've known she should be able to run that sort of time for a while but she had to put it all together and guts out the tough bit and keep going.

Some great vibes from everyone, I may as well add to the positivity...

Completed my longest ever run on Saturday having taken part on the London Towpath Challenge. 17 miles from Putney Bridge to Hampton Court (a little further, but basically Hampton Court) along the towpath.

Not sure how, but I finished 12th out of 468. Clearly the field wasn't up to much, but quite chuffed / surprised with that!

Great run, were there many steps? can imagine there are some challenging moments on that one.

Good job on the run.

I never realised there was a towpath through Putney and Kingston. I would have made use of it when I lived in the area as Richmond Park, although lovely, was a bit boring after a while.

Blimey, good weekend for many. I broke out in to a sweat just looking at the profile on Ewen's race biggrin

Congratulations, you've all shamed me in to going for a run when I get home biggrin

Have just found that I'm going to spending the next 3 months in Holland, so lots of free evenings and there's a running club that meets about 1km away from the office. Might be a good opportunity to improve my running, but won't be much good for hill training.

After 11 miles on Sunday, I did an easy 5 last night with the new run club and then ran in the 6 miles to work this morning, so my legs are feeling a bit battered. Saw no snakes which is always a bonus smile
It's a bit different running with a backpack with a computer/food etc in and I'm able to average about 8 min miles but it still feels strange.

Questions:
- Was discussing last night how often to replace trainers and some suggested every 3-400 miles. I thought it was 500 miles, but wondered what the PH gurus think on this?
- Post running, how soon should you stretch? 5 mins, anytime later that day?
- Do you always but trainers which are 1/2 size greater than your shoe size?

With my first marathon on the horizon (2 weeks), I've been thinking about my target time a lot more.

I'd be happy with sub 4hr, but think I can hit 3:45 according to previous shorter races (1:40 HM). During my last taper LSR of 12mi, I kept to a pace similar to what I'd need to run to hit a 3:45 mara (i.e. 5:20/km) and it felt pretty easy (although it is only 12mi).

Saying that, I've very recently bought a HRM to use with my watch. So I've been keeping an eye on what zone I run in - this 12 miler I averaged ~160BPM (I've hit a MHR of about 197 before), so I guess I'm running at 80-85% MHR.

I'm wondering if I should re-evaluate my target time/pace based on heart rate data rather than looking at time for shorter runs and LSR's. Am I over thinking it and just need to get this first one under my belt before I can accurately set a goal?

I am a heavy heel striker so mine are normally shot within 300-400 miles but when I asked the guy at the running shop about replacing them he said that as long as there isnt any cracks in the 'foam' part between the sole and the upper part then it should be OK. If you can bend them in half then its time for replacing as well - compare trying to bend a new pair with an old pair to see the difference.

When I put on an old pair of shoes that are nearer 500 miles then I can feel that the padding has gone so 500 is probably the upper limit.

I do 5-10 minutes of stretching after a run as the muscles are still warm then.

For me it depends on the brand. I am a size 11 and Saucony in size 11 fits fine but in Asics I am 11.5 - in Asics 11 my toes are touching the front of the shoe and there is no thumb width gap that you are meant to have.
