England Vs Germany 22nd August 2007
Discussion
Owen did show signs IMO, he was in the right places, Becks clearly not fit, some decent stuff though.
Personally I thought Barry did okay for what little chance he had, anyone else think that? Okay he's never going to get ahead of Gerrard, Lamps, Hargreaves, Carrick or Cole.
Richards, looking better all the time, trouble is, at world level you can't continue to play him at right back, when he's going to be playing centre half at club level from now on.
Wes Beige, didn't look comfortable
Shorey out of his league, tried hard enough, no final spark of quality

For me, the plus signs from last night:
SWP
Richards
Barry
J Cole
Things to worry about:
The bloke in charge.
The FA

Tonker how did you find the new wembley stadium out of curiosity?
Pretty dismal show by England, Germany weren't exactly fantastic. Still en enjoyable game, if a touch frustrating.
Sad state of affairs when you go to Wembley and notice the stadium more than the team / performance. Pretty dismal show by England, Germany weren't exactly fantastic. Still en enjoyable game, if a touch frustrating.
Sounds like a bit of a wasted oppertunity Was hoping to hear loads of positive reviews of it as a venue, but thus far it seems a bit dissapointing.
you know what I meant

There are loads of signs.I was also there last night, my first time at the 'New' Wembley. I'd pretty much agree with tonker.
We left quite under whelmed. The size of the place is impressive, it is HUGE as you would expect. Howver, apart from the front, ie up Olympic way, it is not much different to any other stadium built in this country in the last 10 years or so, just bigger. Sticking a big arch on it has not given it any character or soul at all. It seems to be lacking innovation (except the escalators, but who wants them in a football stadium? I'd rather take the stairs thanks...except you don't get a choice), maybe we should get our ideas from the Germans...Allianz Arena etc.
The FA said that Wembley would be the best stadium in the world, but in my opinion they haven't delivered on their promise.
On the plus side, as already said by tonker, getting to and from the stadium was no problem.
The Germans were better than us in every way last night. It comes to something when they sung more songs in English than we did!
I'm not even going to bother commenting on the game...

I'd hoped he would take the opportunity to put Stephen Taylor on in the second half, instead he went for Brown. Missed opportunity IMO. Taylor looked v impressive in the U21 championships earlier in the year, as did a number of others like Lita, Derbyshire, Nugent, Carson (poss replacement for the hapless Robinson?), Milner, Young etc.. Should bode well for a few years time?
Remember the old Spitting Image song from way back when, 'Robson's Glory Boys?'
We have lots of celebrity footballists who aren't fit to mix Bob Latchford's drinks.
Come to think of it, Linneker would have had at least a brace last night.
Slight Toffee bias but there you go.
England: World Champions at overhype and fatuous expectation.
Hopeless.

Tonker , what a well written account of last nights game, you must have been watching the same game as me unlike the one Steve Mclaren was watching.
Why do managers say things like there's a lot we can take from this....blah blah blah when they should just be honest and say we were not sharp enough not fit enough and played with no conviction , I think we should forget 2008 and start training for 2010 as mentioned before!

Even before the game, McLaren said in an interview, "There's no reason why we can't win this". Great spirit.
To be fair, look at the Premier League and Championship, so many non-English players... great for their respective countries, but not so good for the England team.

Yes, you're right, but we don't exactly have a wave of talent to choose from... Agreed, the manager needs to fix up (or the manager needs to be fixed up) but are we really happy with the eleven we've seen in these recent months? The named squad last night wasn't suggesting that we've got some secret weapons in the making...

When I turned on last night for the last 10 minutes, it seemed we had swp (a right winger) on the left wing and Barry (left sided midfielder) in centre mid. With Beckham being near useless why didnt he change things or was that his plan all along
PLAN??? England don't need a plan. Just get 11 guys to kit-up and run around a pitch for 90 minutes.
I thought the atmosphere was great, the hearty renditions of 'sing when you're winning' and 'one team in England' and all done with only a hint of a German accent!
Still had a great time as my son was one of the flag bearers, he was really made up to be on the pitch with Beckham and co.
