So, I'm at the stage where i want to progress my game. having started golf a year ago I now play to about 28 fairly well but i'm worried i've got some bad habits.

I'm contemplating lessons but i'm worried that they'll get me to play well with my existing clubs, then when i change my clubs i'll be playing with the wrong swing style for my new clubs.

so then i thought about getting my clubs tailor fitted. the way i figure it, the fitting experts will sort me out the right clubs for my height/stance etc so then i'll have the right clubs for my body. But will they then be the right clubs for my swing once i've had it fettled by a pro?

damn i'm confused, any advice wouuld be much appreciated.

incidentally, i'm not really that bad, i have an alright long game, not a bad short game but my very short game (putting) leaves a bit to be desired. so i'll be working on that anyway.

so, lessons or clubs.... you decide!

How old are your clubs? It might not be worth changing them. I play with two different sets and i can use both no problem, play fine with both sets.

Lessons any day of the week. You can make good swings with beginner clubs/slightly the wrong fit but even if you get top end clubs if you can't consistantly make a good swing then they won't help much. Some of the best players I have played with use a 20 year old set of Mizuno "beginner" clubs.

I'd definately think of why you want to change. Is it just to get the latest clubs?

I'm hitting low 80's with a set of 10 year old Pings. They were custom fitted and are 1 in longer with larger grips.

Nah it's nothing to do with getting the latest clubs, more to do with the fact that i've heard getting clubs properly fitted to you can help you no end. I'm not looking for anything special, just the right length shaft etc.

also i notice i play much better when i borrow my dads clubs which i think are slightly longer and with a different lay. I think my swing is fairly consistant anyway (it's just my putting that really isn't!!)

the general consensus is lessons then, i'm happy with that. I shall book some.

thankyou all.

I had lessons then got the clubs fitted once my swing was (reasonably) consistent.

The lessons helped me get rid of things like an annoying slice but then once I'd had the clubs fitted I started to hit many more sweeter shots. You know the kind, where the ball just pings off the club face and you don't get shockwaves flying through your arms smile

The clubs I got were entry level Mizunos with free fitting at American Golf Discount, half inch shorter, thicker grips and a bit flatter than standard lie. The fitting was really cool, they use strike tape on the clubface to see where it's striking the ball and on the bottom of the clubface to see where it's striking the ground. Very interesting...

Lessons without a doubt. I have a entry level set of steel shafted clubs, they are ok, but probably hit the ball out of the sweet spot 7/10. My girlfriend has a set of Grahpite shafted Callaway Big Bertha's, I can hit those out of the sweet spot probably 9/10. However, I have only been able to reach consistency by having lessons and working on my swing, when I started I suspect I would have only hit either club about 5/10. So as you get better and have a more repeatable swing better clubs make a difference, but you need that base first.

Ive never had a lesson in my life and although I dont play very often now due to work I was off 13 at school. Id say the lessons would help over the clubs though.
