Yes, because clubs like Man U or Liverpool never make big money signings
Fewer and for less total value, Liverpools big money signings were few & far between up until recently too. lets look at the most expensive players in a EPL team.

Goalkeeper: Craig Brown £9m, Sunderland
Right back: Daniel Alves £21m , Chelsea
Left back: Gareth Bale £10m Southamton
Centre back: Rio Ferdinand £29.1m Man U
Centre back: Ricardo Carvalho £19.5m Chelsea
Midfield: Juan Sebastian Veron £28.1m Chelsea (on loan!)
Midfield: Michael Essien £26m Chelsea
Midfield: Shaun Wright Phillips £21m Chelsea
Forward: Fernando Torres £26.5m Liverpool
Forward: Wayne Rooney £27m Manu
Forward: Andriy Shevchenko £31m Chelsea

6 from 11 for Chelsea. They've spent significantly more than the opposition

Avram Grant shoutWHO!! Im sorry, but i find this whole sorry saga very amusing, ive been listening most of the day to radio phone-ins. The majority of Chelski fans seem upset and want their special one back.

Do they not realise without the Czars money they would be another Leeds, best you Blues fans keep him happy, you dont want him to take his money away after all, it is his toy.
Sorry, but this is such an outdated view. If Abramovich left tomorrow, one of the many billionaires looking for a football club would purchase it, tomorrow, given it's profile.

Abramovich has made a huge mistake, and Chelsea will suffer, tremendously, now that the Israeli mafia seems to have it's claws firmly entrenched in the club. Grant is a non-entity, who has no experience of this level of management, and is clearly a total cvnt who has been shit-stirring since his arrival. His appointment is on one basis only, and that is, he's Abramovich's mate (and is an Israeli).

With regard to the money spent argument, Liverpool and Man U have spent over many more seasons than Chelsea, who are relatively new to the big spending table, but it's irrelevant, as Mourinho was just as successful, winning the Champions League with Porto, which, as he famously said was worth less than 10% of the Man U team he beat on his way to the trophy.

You'd have to be silly rich and happy to piss away a lot of cvash to buy Chelsea.

I know they've gon one about sustainable business models etc but raly the wage at that club cannot be met with its usual income, not a chance, not even with a CL win. They cant even sell out a CL game at home, they do not have the ground level support.

The naming of the new manager may answer my greatest concern over the matter - wtf Gordon Brown is doing pontificating over Jose bloody Mourinho. Isn't he busy enough running the country (down) without publicly spouting this kind of boocks? My theory is that he misunderstood an advisor and now thinks that Chelsea is grant maintained.

all at sea today - no shape at all and they were worse in the second half

serves RA right for being such a tt for having his head turned

very much doubt we'll be seeing CL football at the bridge next season based on today's performance

4th at best. More likely will be overtaken by the likes of Villa and Tottenham, based on todays shambles. As much as I hate to see them lose, it's perhaps the one time when I've felt that it wasn't such a bad thing, if it hastens the removal of this make-weight.

If it wasn't a case of 10 vs 12 today we might've done better. I agree Grant isn't the man for the job and is only keeping the seat warm until someone with real pedigree comes along, but we need to get behind him. As for today's game, yes we were poor, but the refereeing display was a disgrace. First a joke of a sending off, then a goal scored after the alloted time, then an outrageous bit of cheating for the penalty. So you could say 'well that balances out the Liverpool game'; you would be right insofar as that wasn't a penalty, but for the last 3 Premiership games we have now had wrong decisions that cost us points. That does not in any way balance out.

This level of diving is getting beyond a joke. Any player (and yes, I do include Cole and Drogba in this) found to have dived should serve a 1 match ban. It also infuriates me how when players or managers get it wrong, they have to face the interviews, press conferences and fans. When a ref gets it wrong, he can vanish off home never having to say another word to anyone

Sven and Marco van Basten were sat with RA yesterday, though there's probably nothing to truly be read into that.

Seeing as we're speculating though: Grant hasn't got a coaching license, and I can't see UEFA or the Premier League granting an extension to the 12 week rule given the circumstances. I thought he did ok yesterday, despite being on a hiding to nothing, but there's something that doesn't seem quite right with him in charge and I can't see him being there long-term.

I doubt Eriksson's going to move given his current position and the success he's been experiencing at MC.

So if there is anything to read into Sven and van Basten's visit it's van Basten in the frame for the manager's position. Worth a bash I think. He's got a good record internationally, although that's his only managerial experience, and he's known for doing his own thing (not picking Bergkamp, dropping van Nistelrooy) which may not fit in with RA. He obviously has a very good understanding of the game so why not ?

IMO RA will be looking for a yes man who will integrate players the owner wants to sign

any serious manager will not throw his name into that particular hat

I agree, but I think even RA appreciates the need for a manager to get the best out of his players. I believe a big part of the problem between RA and JM was JM's treatment and obvious disdain for Ballack and Shevchenko. JM's management of the likes of Joe Cole and Drogba had a huge impact on the improvements those players have shown and how well they eventually integrated into the team. I believe he would have had the same effect on Ballack and Shevchenko if his heart had have been in it, which it obviously wasn't.

So the answer appears to be a manager that will accept RA buying players whenever it suits him and will make the best of them. Grant will let RA do as he pleases, but will not get the best out of the players he has. van Basten, or any other manager of a similar quality, will, and RA I am sure will be well aware of that fact.

No I don't agree, Shevchenko was an embarrassment on Sunday, but then he's been an embarrassment, since his arrival. £30million is an unbelievable amount to pay for a striker, who can't run anymore. Compared with Torres, Sheva is utter shite. Ballack strode around the pitch, last season, as if he couldn't be bothered, he barely had an impact in a single game that he played in.

I'm sorry but star names do not make a star team. Look at Arsenal, they are flying, mainly because of Fabregas and Adebayor, who were unknown, before their arrival at Arsenal, but are now worth 10 times more than Chelsea could hope to sell Sheva for. If Chelsea manage to get £5million for Sheva, that'll be a good bit of business, frankly.

Sacking Mourinho and RA's interference in team affairs has ruined Chelsea. They could've dominated, with their squad of 3 years ago, but now, that is a remote possibility.

Can't really argue with that, though my point was that JM could have got a lot more out of him. Sheva obviously has confidence issues and I suspect JM made it worse. Joe Cole had confidence issues, JM sorted him out and now he's world class.

968 said:

Harsh but to a degree I agree with you, especially given his age.

968 said:

On current form yes. However, compare Torres' career record with that of Sheva's at a similar age and there's not much to chose between them, if anything Sheva's was slightly better.

Again I agree. Ballack has an attitude problem, again I suspect compunded my JM.

No, but it can help.

All managers will have players that come good, for whatever reason; but then all managers will have players that turn into white elephants. Fergie has a similar record to JM, for every Giggs he "made" there was a Forlan, similarly my earlier point about Joe Cole and Drogba being "made" by JM, the flip side was a Sheva or a Hilario. Adebayor is having a good year, so far, off the back of the rest of the Arsenal team; his previous record was 8 in 57 for Arsenal and 20 in 100 for Monaco. Time will tell if he proves to have as prolific a season as Drogba had last year,

At his age and given his current form you may be right, but it wouldn't be the first time a big player was brought for a firtune only to be sold for a relative pitance following a bad year or 2,

Not yet, I think it will depend on who eventually gets appointed as long term manager. Unrest between owners/boards and the manager is only ever going to do harm to a club so it may be a good thing for the club longer-term. Personally I would have preferred RA to go rather than JM.

But still a possibility. Although there's a long way to go I wouldn't bet on them winning anything this year, but dependant on what they do in the next few months they have every chance.

All IMHO of course smile

Ballack and Sheva did not fit into his system, they were foisted upon Mourinho, and when they did get to play, they were awful. Talking about Shevas record 10 years ago is irrelevant, he was bought a year or more ago, therefore it was terrible business, buying a past it striker who can't run.

Star names do NOT make a team, and I'm not sure it does help, unless those stars have been intergral in the development of a star team. Look at Real Madrid, when the galacticos were present, they were crap, a bit like Chelsea of now, however, when pragmatism was introduced, by Capello, and big names were ejected, they won.

In case you hadn't noticed, Grant has been appointed as full time manager, not care taker, not anything else. No he hasn't got his uefa badge, but I'm sure Roman's billions will buy that for him.

The problem is no self-respecting manager would take the Chelsea job, as they know it will involve taking orders from a wit who knows nothing about football, but thinks he does.

Apart from anything else, most reputable managers are in post at the moment. Van Basten has little or no experience in managing top flight clubs. Eriksson is not going to leave Man City, Hiddink doesn't want to leave Russia, and isn't stupid enough to accept the poisoned chalice that is Chelsea, Capello has just left one club where his tactics were questioned.

I predict Chelsea's unbeaten home record will go, this weekend, against Fulham. They were pathetic against Man U, and Grant has absolutely no ability to motivate the players, as evidenced by the second half display at Man U.
