Engineering works and bad planning

I have entered the Great South Run in Portsmouth this year and was expecting to be making the journey from Croydon by train, BUT, have found out that it would mean taking a train down to Brighton, then getting a train to Chichester, then getting a rail replacement bus from Chichester to Portsmouth as they are doing engineering works on the weekend when there will be in the region of 18,000 runners trying to get into town.
I am now having to arrange for my brother to stay at my house and then drive me down to Portsmouth at some rediculous time of the morning when i shall be psyching(sp)myself up for the run.
Why is it that they couldn't plan the works for the weekend before or the weekend after, or would that be asking for too much?
