Al Oerter passed away yesterday .

He won the Olympic discus gold in 1956,1960,1964,1968.

He set a new Olympic record on each occasion.

No-one else in the history of the games has achieved this, nor is this feat likely to be repeated.

A sad day.

Can of worms as to whether he's the greatest olympian ever - such a subjective measure. But yes, it is indeed a sad day.
RIP.

Al Oerter was a great guy. I flew on the same plane with him once. He was just across the aisle. He told a story about the coaches telling him he was too heavy. "Hell, my skeleton weighs 200 pounds!" was his answer.
