My mate was a decent rower. Rowed for Newcastle and Warwick.

He didn't have a middle name and they wouldn't let him register for Henley without one biglaugh

He's now first name MHP last name.

E-coli poisoning for some of the crews......

I thought they should have cancelled it, to make a point about the filth in the water......
There are many thousands of hours goes into the prep for this race. I think it would be unfair to sacrifice both crews on this alter.

I do agree though, as an ex-rower who has rowed in some awful water, it is a disgrace what is happening with our rivers - especially given dividends and salaries paid.

Sir Steve said it was like Karting is to F1,
This simile only works when comparing a thing to another thing is x is to y is like a is to b eg rowing is to powerboating as karting is to F1.

I can see it now - "my dad got a rowing brown for Oxford".

What next - the turd jumps at Ascot?

It’s a tradition for toffs.
It's a tradition for extremely fit and dedicated young folk who put in 100's if not 1000's of hours training for the sake of competing.

“Toffs” So what are you then? A peasant? biglaugh

Your use of the word suggests you defer to them as your superiors. Surely you are equal?

Why do the British cling to such stupid ‘class’ identifiers?

List the boat race teams. Then you’ll figure out this simple equation.

It’s not easy to find their social class. As you seem to have the information why not share it?

It's also bks... Both pick folks who will offer an athletic advantage rather than one of status - have done for years.

James cracknell, for example, was a grammar kid.

If you don’t apply that’s unlikely. So, my favourite stalker, are you an oxbridge grad?

Do you know when I started to watch the Boat Race on Saturday rather than open up another thread I looked and found this one.
I was genuinely enjoying it and posted accordingly. I was hoping it wouldnt go the way it has.
It's a sad reflection of how the forums are going generally.

anyway no doubt some one will come back with a glib reply but you know I just think it's genuinely quite sad.
Must be my upper class upbringing that causes me to like to watch this race except that I didnt have one.

If you didn’t go there what are you basing your assessment of them all being toffs on?

It wasn’t my experience at all, I felt very much welcomed there when I arrived from my state comprehensive in a (former) mining town.

What I found was extremely bright people with a genuine love for their chosen subject who wanted to get a good education in it.

A passing interest in this (although didn't watch this year).

I came to post how exhausting it is to have every thread ruined by negativity and toxic commentary.

The "toffs" comment I mean. I see it all over the internet.

Something semi-interesting to then see just bitterness in response.

It's honestly depressing.

It's likely a lot of these haters will be working for one of these 'toff's' - who they have no experience of meeting, in the future. hehe
