Sometimes rematches allow for mistakes, and give the general public the fights they want.

But sometimes i feel the need for fighters to wait a period of time to recover from fights, then re train for a rematch simply makes a division / title stagnant.

Id prefer to think you get a chance of a title shot again within a reasonable time frame. Not have a champion sit on their arse waiting for you.
Simply work your way back and get the shot

Overall id rather less rematches and more people being given the fair shot they have worked for

Mayweather in boxing has for me played the rematch card far to often , with rematches against fighters he knew he would re beat. Rather than taking on the next in line.

Im sure the general public would soon accept a division being fair and rankings being a true reflection of who is next in line for a fight.

My first time watching UFC at the weekend.

So, I'm assuming the Weidman/Rockhold fight isn't a normal thing for UFC? I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure the ref should have called that prior the end of the third round.

I'm not squeamish and I'm all for two guys really going to town on each other, but Weidman's face was an absolute trainwreck and, aside from the odd limp return, he was getting absolutely pummeled. Really good fight though. Could see me getting into this as a step up from boxing.

Any recommendations on past fights that are worth a watch?

Not even sure I'd call it a straight mistake (result aside). He did what he often does. Not the first time he has run in flailing trying to brute force a result. To do that against a precise counter puncher with a long reach is nuts.

I think McGregor made some comment afterwards about a rematch. It will after all make a lot of financial sense for him to do so. They could easily have it this weekend, neither fighter could be tired smile

Aldo will have a medical suspension after that KO so that will come in to it. He mentioned the 155 belt and also Frankie Edger here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_nFe4RlbY4 so might not be that bothered by the rematch???

The amount of damage wasn't necessarily out of the ordinary, they do get cuts a lot more than boxers due to Elbows, kicks etc, but yes ordinarily that would have been called at the end of Rd 3. The sport isn't about someone having the absolute st kicked out of them.

For previous fights maybe check out McGregors last fight against Mendes, also have a look on YouTube, just search Best UFC fights or Ko's

Like yourself I am a boxing fan originally, only got into UFC 2-3 years ago, I much prefer it now, Boxing is still very pure but I often find fights dull now (take Mayweather/Pacquio) you very rarely get let down in UFC

I felt it could have been stopped at the end of round 3, but I'm not surprised it wasn't, it's a tough call for the ref, the rules state you must actively/intelligently defend yourself, which Weidman was, his hands were defending his face and head was moving, but when you're exhausted and someone is in the mount and dropping full body weight elbows over and over there is no method to defend yourself in reality. Most people, me included, though Weidman a massive favourite, I think the ref may have been giving him the benefit of the doubt, but he was never going to recover from that.

Recently the Lawler/Macdonald fight is pretty violent as mentioned the last Dos Anjos vs Pettis is a masterclass in punching and kicking, Junior dos Santos vs Miocic two 200lb guys ttting each other for 30 minutes, but there's over 10 years of this stuff out there now, if you enjoy the thrill of the violence rather than the technique of MMA then you'll be on fast forward for quite a few matches though.

I agree entirely with what you're saying but the Mayweather example is a really bad one. He has had two rematches in 49 fights / 19 years and both were called for after a poor showing from him the first time out.

I'd like to see them go at it again but I'd like to see Aldo take a couple of fights prior to a rematch.

Cracking weekend of fighting with pretty much all the results I was looking for.

I'd like to have seen Nelson look a bit more competitive against Maia though.

Even the boxing was good this weekend!

Agreed VEA, I was expecting Nelson to put up more of a fight.
He was the only one to let me down on my 5 match bet Saturday. Luckily for me my 5 match bet for Friday night came in.

Bloody spell check! Diego, not diagonal! biggrin

194. Herb did leave it too long. But he is one of the very best refs out there. Even they are allowed bad days. But Weidman was fine until he threw that kick. Rockhold needs a class lesson. Something I was happy to see Connor display.

The supporting fights up to that were poor.prelims were ok.

Just catching up on the Edgar card as well. Cracking fight in there, fight two. Only got that far!
