Martinez blown away by Cotto.
Great display from Cotto, but it really looked like the years and the injuries had caught up with Martinez. At times, his movement just looked painful, like he was in his late fifties or he'd been hitting the Special Brew pretty hard - a mixture of his damaged knees and being dropped several times in the first. All credit then to him for hanging in as long as he did. Just a pity it wasn't one of our guys in the opposite corner when Father Time finally caught up with Martinez.

On the same card, there was a tremendous win for Andy Lee. He too was dropped heavily in the first and seemed to be up against it, but retained his composure despite the pressure and unleashed a fantastic short right off the ropes in the fifth...one of those shots where knew he'd won the instant he connected. Really hope he can work his way to a world title but think that will be a very tall order until Mayweather and Alvarez officially leave the Light Middleweight division...

Did anyone else see the IBF Bantamweight title fight between Stuart Hall and Paul Butler? Absolutely cracking fight! Thought it was close contest and really admired the resolve of Hall to battle his way back into it, but Butler looked real class, even if he doesn't quite look like he's grown into the weight yet. I think I'd still fancy Jamie McDonnell if they were to fight tomorrow, primarily because of his strength in the second half of the fight, but give it another year or two and Butler I reckon will be an absolute world-beater.

Earlier on, David Price looked good and got precious rounds under his belt in a points win over 10 rounds (only saw the last 90 seconds myself though!) while Eubank flipped between looking brilliant and looking a berk so frequently I lost count. All in all, a really good Saturday night!!!
Martinez has definitely been slipping and the injuries have been taking a toll. But if the commentators hadn't been going on about his knees so much - even, relentlessly before the fight - I don't think viewers would have seen it as bad as made out. I've watched it twice now and with commentary turned down the main thing is the effects of the punches, esp. early doors but on and off throughout. As he admitted himself at the end. Plus an overly slippery ring, partly his team's doing, partly these stupid logos they need to get a bloody grip on.

The main thing was the control, discipline, authority and movement of Cotto. When he's on his game his footwork and control of the ring, distance and angles is sublime. Like with the revenge fight against Margaritto. So good I regularly watch him again and again and then practise as best I can in my own training. Inspirational, and he deserves more credit than Martinez and his knees blame.

Oh, and Andy Lee... wow!

Maybe, but it probably didn't help that Martinez was wearing shorts that came down below his knees...looked like he was trying to hide the knee supports he was wearing, which made me focus on them even more!

Andy Lee's KO was awesome, watched it time after time, completely sparked out John Jackson, it was just BANG, and he sent Jackson into the middle of next week.

Beautiful

look at the weight and size of pulev!.....I didn't realize he was that big.probably because he's been felling trees like Ustinov and dimitrenko so by comparison looked smaller!

wlad- 6ft 6in 81 inch reach and 247lb last time out

pulev- 6ft 5in 80 inch reach and 254lb last time out

To be honest, I didn't think he was that big either. I had him in mind as a similar size to someone like Chisora...around 6' 2'', 240lbs.

Glad the fight is being made. I think Pulev is currently the most credible challenger Wlad has yet to fight. Let's hope it is a more even contest than the Povetkin match-up...

I don't want to be a mood hoover out of spite, and hope it goes well for you, but I can't see it being anything other than one sided in the greater probability.

I've seen quite a bit of Pulev and think he flatters to deceive, isn't fully 'on it' throughout a fight and is, basically, a bit lazy. Plus he's nearly as heavy, but much fleshier and in less good condition than Wlad so won't be likely to push him about or tie him up easily, or to have more steam than Wlad in the later rounds. Plus, I don't think his head movement or control of distance will be enough to allow him to deal with that jab.

As we've noted before people won't realise how very, very good Wladimir is (in any all time rating sense) until he's gone. So many good up and comers build excitement, come up and face Klitschko (one or two) and get found out.

On the other hand he probably does have the power to hurt Wlad if he lands. So, maybe, just maybe...

I know you rate Lomenchenko too - have you remembered his world title bid is on this weekend? Box Nation, against Gary Russel Jr., early hours of Saturday/Sunday morning.

don't get me wrong mate, I fully expect wlad to dominate the fight ; we know what we get with him every time he fights(ie a master at controlling the distance and dictating the rhythm of the fight etc) but i'm interested to see how much pulev has got in him. I always get the feeling that whoever he is fighting he has plenty more up his sleeve, that he is a level above the guys in front of him.

......the main thing for me though is to finally get to go and see wlad fight live. I've come close a few times but there has always been something to stop me. I even had a ticket for the fight he had against monte barret on the lewis/botha card in London back in 2000 but ended up watching it on a big screen in an alehouse in the isle of man instead!

big arena on his "home" turf will be amazing and it's really important for me to tick that box so I can tell the grandkids I saw klitschko fight live. I missed out on vitali, there's no way i'll miss out on wlad!

as to lomachenko.....I've watched this guy for years and always felt his style would lend itself to the pros well. I did wonder, however, about taking on a world title fight against a seasoned pro in only his second fight.as experienced as he is as an amateur I thought there was no possible way he could slip into the pace of a 12 round fight with no previous experience of the distance. as it goes he didn't pace himself properly in the salido fight and paid the price for keeping too much in reserve and having a slow start which cost him dearly.
did he learn enough last time to allow him to do it this time?? as impressive as Russell jr's record is there are no recognizable names there so we simply don't know enough about him. i'd expect lomachenko to make history and win a world title in record time, but without much to go on with Russell I wouldn't be so bold as to predict the nature of the victory........oh,ok,.....late stoppage or points??based on the strength of his body attack

i'd like to see him fight lee Selby!!

I envy you!

I wish I could see him for real - you have a good point about it being something for the grandkids! - it should be awesome, esp. with a good close view. I had the chance to do ring security for the Bruno Bugner fight at White Hart Lane (dates me) and for the cost of buying or hiring a Dinner Jacket (and nerves!) blew it, only to see my mate on TV in and out of the ring and standing there with a ringside view. Doh...

Agree about Lomenchenko too. Had the beating of Salido (a big ask in itself at that stage) but inexperience and possibly overconfidence let him down. I reckon he'll win this one.

Got to say, the one I'd love to see be made would be Lomachenko vs Rigondeaux. Problem is, probably not a great deal of money in it...maybe Donaire would be more viable?

Sounds great mate...been a while coming for you by the sounds of it so enjoy every minute! However, one piece of advice; before you fork out for the expensive seats, make sure the place has a roof. When I went to the Haye-Chisora fight at Upton Park, it started peeing with rain and a lot of the people who had shelled out top prices for the ringside seats were forced to take shelter in the stands with the penny-pinchers like me!

Top tip fella! ! Luckily the arena is all indoor so we aren't going to be susceptible to the german autumnal weather!
......flights booked....hotel booked.....all I'm waiting for now is the tickets to come on sale on the 25th and I'm all set. I'll have to make sure I've not had a drink before I book because half pissed I'd end up maxing the credit card to be sat in the second row! !!
I've made sure I get to hamburg early enough on Friday to make the weigh in.....loads of photos imminent

Well, he's done it! An excellent display against a real live, dangerous opponent. Probably the best amateur boxer ever and now looks like he's turning into a very solid professional. I loved his footwork and use of distance to avoid Russel's speed and the fact that he was aggressive throughout, with some fantastic combination-punching attacks.

Then thee was Guerrero v Kamegai. Christ! Scarily awesome. What a fight.

My missus and I play a game when watching the boxing called family, gangster or sportsman, it basically involves picking out people who are sat ringside and guessing whether they're family, gangster or sportsman. You've thrown a spanner into that pass time!
