You're right, it is a disservice to call Kovalev a plodder. The point I (badly) tried to make is that he struggles against guys with exceptional hand and foot speed and those guys in their prime (Jones, Calzaghe, Dawson and Taylor) make people like Kovalev seem like a slow plodder by comparison.

Yes he can cut the ring off but he hasn't fought anyone as smart as Hopkins so it'll be interesting to see if he can still do that against a master technician. If he allows Hopkins to tie him up and turn him then he's in for a rough night.

I take nothing away from Kovalev, if he beats this version of Hopkins then it's still a fantastic win. But the only way I see that happening is if age finally gets the better of Hopkins.

I'm very much undecided who I want to win, you can't but admire Hopkins - but I wouldn't call myself a fan, like Mayweather his style isn't one that brings you too a fever pitch of excitement, yet he has been involved in some great fights, and it would be a historic win, but if I had to bet my house on the result I'd say Kovalev is going to knock him out, round 6.

I've made up my mind, and I'm gonna say round 6 KO for Kovalev too.

robatron,
I get your point fella, but............... the thing I like about this new breed of eastern european/ soviet system trained guys like kovalev/beterbiev/golovkin/pirog(looks like he's coming back!!!!) is that they CAN handle the turn-on-a-sixpence fighters by half stepping back out to reset then ploughing back in to stay on the fighting line while cutting the ring down in the corners. Bernard won't be able to just keep turning him and lead him round the ring by the nose all night like he can against the less sophisticated come forward fighters like shumenov who showed a total lack of ideas against Hopkins....

one thing's for sure, i'm looking forward to this fight more than any other Hopkins fight since calzaghe

Odds of 14/1 for those of you fancying Kovalev to KO Bhop in the 6th..... Sounds a fair call, I just cant bring myself to put money on Bhop being KO'd given he never has been (to my knowledge)...

Boxnation really is a joke of a site, they use some unknown payment gateway, it will not let me register without my sky viewing card number???

talkabout having a frictionless experience, its like walking around in circles whilst self harming

never again

anyway, although it kills me to say it, I think Kovalev will be too much for his 49 year old body. I can see a KO inside 5 rounds

I saw the fight listed as 10.45pm EDT. Google reckons EDT is 5hrs behind us, which would make it 3.45am UK time.

Horrible last minute. A nice claim for Hopkins to have that he's still never been stopped, even against a colossal puncher like Kovalev, but things like that shouldn't come into consideration...the ref should have stepped in.

I disagree regardless of age let the man go out on his shield yes he was under heavy pressure but it was not like he was badly dropped at the start of the round then under serious pressure to see it out.And another point although he was looking to just get through the fight in my opinion(the term gun shy comes to mind) he was not taking a terrible beating in there he was just not that competitive and was being outworked.Remember although Hopkins was getting caught a lot of the punches he was taking the sting out of them by riding them look at him at the end of the fight not a mark on the guy

Through most of the fight he was taking the sting out of the punches (though he was still taking punches) but in the latter part of the final round he was repeatedly being caught cleanly, having his head snapped back, and was offering virtually no defence. That in itself is sufficient enough grounds to stop the fight (given the referee's final instruction is always 'defend yourself at all times'), leaving aside the fact there was zero chance of it affecting the outcome of the fight at that stage.

Yes, it's a nice footnote to Hopkins' career (assuming he calls it a day) that he hasn't been stopped, but the welfare of the fighter should always be the primary consideration. As it happens, Hopkins looked fine afterwards so hopefully he's come through unscathed...

I too think it should have been stopped , Hopkins IMO Hopkins was taking necessary heavy punches to the head.

I was way off ,I thought, as a lot here did, that Kovalev would stop him by 5/6 rounds, reading back only one or two poster's got it right.

I liked the slip of tongue at the end from Kovalev about Hopkins, he said "He is best fighter" then quickly added"After me " whatever Hopkins is he has put himself up among Hearns & Hagler.
