Hi

by brother has just bought an S2 Esprit and the brake pedal is long and retardation poor. I know the Esprit never had good brakes (even the later ones are not great IMO) but I was expecting at least a hard pedal. Any thoughts?

Don't know much in particular about S2's but have you checked the normal stuff, worn discs, sticking calipers, worn pads, any fluid leaks, slack or oval shaped clevis pins on the actuating pushrod of the M/Cylinder ?

much wiser folk will be along in a minute to help you.

normal stuff looks ok i.e. discs not too work, pads ok, lines braided.

Brake master cylinder? I changed mine and went from ok/poor brakes to exceptionally good brakes on my Esprit Turbo

Must admit I have doubts about the master cylinder. We have checked the servo and that seems to be working fine.
We are changing callipers and front discs and pads this weekend. The callipers have never changed as far as we can work out and the car is at 80k so they are past their sell by date. Discs and pads are a no brainer as are so cheap and they are worn. If all that plus a good bleed don't sort the problem then I will do the master cylinder. Hopefully there is a rebuild kit available.

cheers

Always start with bleeding the rear near side calliper, they have quite a hard time being next to the exhaust manifold. What with use of the brakes and heat from the manifold sitting in traffic it causes the brake fluid to boil up and get air in the system.
You'll also find out if it needs a rebuild, they get lazy when they heat up and bind a bit when hot.

My Esprit had fantastic brakes, even before I rebuilt them... that was on bog-standard calipers etc..

Mind you I also have a TVR, now if you want dire brakes... biggrin
