Is replacing the cam-cover gaskets on an 88'Esprit very difficult?

Yes,

I did this recently several times on my S4s (since sold it as it needed huge £££ to repair the engine).

All 4 Cyl Esprit's develop this leak. It causes the engine oil to spray everywhere and increases oil consumption. Worse case scenario you run low on oil and the main bearings break. Best case scenario the engine/sump will get really dirty.

You need to disturb the cam belt timing. Main dealer would charge close to £1K. You can DIY but it will cost you a bit in tools (Parts are cheap. £16 for 2 x cam tower oil seals plus you need a sealant for the cam tower covers, new cam belt,7 litres good engine oil. Dealer labour is not as they will charge at least 8 hours!).

Let a main dealer do it as unless you are very determined and can cope with physically tough conditions (you need to lay on the engine on your stomach whilst holding a 17 & 19mm spanner to re-tighten the cam belt tensioner.

Main dealer as opposed to someone else as if they get it wrong you can get them to fix it under their warranty. If someone else got this wrong you are looking at £££ for new pistons/valves etc.

Good Luck
