Not a photo but skip to 5.40 on this old Top Gear video of Tiff testing the Mclaren F1 at Goodwood....

Amazing to compare this to the same view now which would be across from the pit lane towards what became the Vitra Café and with the newly restored control tower lurking behind the trees at the end on the right. Given we all think of Goodwood as the archetypical "timewarp" track the changes are remarkable.

I love the 'camcorder' the guy is holding behind the black De Tomaso in the second set of pictures. How technology has moved on!http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

This thread is great. I remember spending quite a bit of time at the track in my early teens while my dad sprinted a Turner and a Mini Cooper. His friend, Alan Harding, used to sprint an Alfa GTV6. I quite often used to move the cars up in the queue so the owners didn't have to wait with them. I had about 3 or 4 cars I was looking after like that including Tim Bird's Porsche 911.
The restored circuit is fantastic, but I will always have fond memories of the way it was during this period. The dirt paddock, the corrugated iron pit buildings and there was even an old brick ramp you could use to get under the car.

As others have said, its incredible to see the difference in the circuit nowadays compared to when these photos were taken.
Anyone who complains about the high ticket prices to Goodwood events should look at these pictures and realise how much money must have been spent on the circuit to get it up to its current immaculate condition.

This is great, I have some more of a supercar day which I think Carrera Sport in Haywards Heath used to run. I remember there was a white Countach with the number plate 5EXY I think and very tricked engined black 911 with a very loud ICE package. I will try and dig them out.
Keep digging guys the pixs are out there
I love the way everyone stood on the banking very close to the track, although in the pit lane the marshalls were always screaming at folk to get out of the way, it was a bit like the rally stages with folk on the course…. I think what they have done to the pits and area is great today but it was quite eventful wandering about in the mud.
On one occasion I was coming back from a meeting and popped in to see if anything was going on and as I turned out of the tunnel I came face to face with a Mclaren F1 prototype.
It turned out it was a customer day at the circuit. So I parked quietly and wandered up to the pit wall to see Jonathan Palmer taking customers round on demo laps. Peter Gethin was there and gave me a look as like what are you doing here so I just smiled and carried on watching…I bet you cant do that today when it is closed off

Wow, this thread about Goodwood race circuit before its makeover took me back quite a few years to the 1980s and early 1990s. I have a few photographs of the circuit somewhere. I even managed a few spins around the circuit as a passenger in various cars including an orange Lamborghini Urraco, white Ford RS Turbo and a pale blue Porsche 928, there might be a few more cars but those are what I can remember at this moment as I type - did anyone take any photographs of these cars. Have some video footage from inside the RS Turbo as it lapped the circuit which was very impressive - the video quality wasn't quite so good but entertaining nevertheless!
You are quite right about the pearl white Countach 18 5EXY attending the Carrera Sport Supercar Testday at Goodwood organised by Mike Pullen who I think used to thrash around in his well sorted dark purple Countach LP400S and a black Porsche 911, I attended several of these meetings back in the 1980s and 1990s and took quite a few photographs, some of which I have posted on the Countach thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... though can post a few pics on here if no one minds me reposting them again.
You were spot on with your comments about being able to stand on the embankment and watch as the cars accelerated out of the chicane, and as per normal, I would stand there for ages with nothing much happening, turn around and walk away, only to hear the screech of tyres and watch from a distance as some unfortunate car spun off onto the grass - was a fantastic time.
BTW, I tried to send you an email but received the message 'Oops... Sorry - the recipient doesn't permit emails.'
