The 72nd Members' Meeting - March 2014
Discussion
There has not yet been a suggestion that it'll be thrown open to the general public, the letter said that GRRC members should buy their tickets now or they'll invite other carefully selected motorsport clubs to participate.
I wonder if that means opening it up everybody on this forum?
Doubt it.

Well, they're clearly spooked to have sent a letter from Lord March. Mine arrived this morning dated 17 Dec. " James MacNaughton and I have every confidence...". Mmmm....clearly you don't chaps!
As the OP and a member who bought tickets early-on I'm somewhat disappointed as FoS and Revvial have grown out of control as have GRRC breakfasts...and it is now clear they will have to open this up to the general public. You can dress it up as selected motor enthusiasts, but other than those on the waiting list for GRRC I can't see how it would be controlled as I'm sure Lord March has already invited all of his pals and selected enthusiasts.
Letter is a bit like holding a gun to the head of club members..."we're putting on this event therefore you should buy tickets and support us (along with FoS and Revival)". Not a lot of real world understanding of general public's finances...membership, FoS, Revival and now 72nd...that adds up a lot of money for those member enthusiasts on tight budgets buying a few tickets, and grandstand tickets and, and, and.
I also question the timing of the event as it's pretty parky at that time of year and whilst I'm sure we're all hardy chaps, our women will get "tired" of it far more quickly if it's cold/wet/damp...at least at FoS and Revival it's warm and "just hanging in there", respectively...this has to be a factor for slow take up.
So in summary, it's a shame the letter has had to go out, it taints the event and now makes me think it will not be what it was conceived to be. And that it will be full of the general public, not invested in properly as GRRC will be hedging their bets and early Feb is rather late to be committing to expenditure. I wonder with the comments above that the general public are already being offered tickets whether the 7 Feb is now a "go, no-go" decision date rather than a point of opening up to public? We shall see in due course, but this development makes me feel rather "meh" about it all, and I already feel like this about their tracks days...but that's another topic for another thread!

Could I (respectfully) suggest that posters think carefully before using derogatory terms to describe the general public, or non members of GRRC.
I would point out that the volunteers and marshals, without whom you would have no race meetings, are probably 99.9% not members or GRRC and therefore by extension 'plebs' who may take exception to being regarded as in some way inferior beings, and vote with their feet when asked to make themselves available.
Before anyone tries to argue the point, I know what the definition of the word is, but in reality that's not what it means when being used, as it is here, in the vernacular.

btw, not a policeman!!

Very well said. I don't want the GRRC to be viewed as some sort of eliteist club. It isn't. It was formed as an evolution of an organisation, trying to get racing back to the Goodwood track, by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts.I would point out that the volunteers and marshals, without whom you would have no race meetings, are probably 99.9% not members or GRRC and therefore by extension 'plebs' who may take exception to being regarded as in some way inferior beings, and vote with their feet when asked to make themselves available.

As for this event. I thought I would wait and see what transpired, as to whether it would be 'as billed'. It looks as though it isn't. Oh well, Goodwood is a business after all.

We are rather getting way from the point and that is that the event was billed as being a club event meaning among other things that there would be a limited attendance. By definition an event for members only is exclusive, that's the whole point. Nothing to do with being snobbish or elitist but simply paying to watch motor racing at an uncrowned event.
The newsletter that arrived at chez moi last week clearly states, and I quote:
"This new annual event, held exclusively for GRRC members"
Also
"This is very much a GRRC event held for GRRC members and their guests"
I therefore take it as red that tickets can only be purchased by GRRC members and that Job Public cannot attend unless they are invited as a GRRC member's guest. This is not a slight on non GRRC members or any attempt at elitism, just an observation based on previously posted comments
If tickets are sold to Joe Public and this becomes public knowledge then the reputation of the club and it's management would come under scrutiny.

I've been in touch with the media guys at Goodwood as I wanted to cover the Members' Meeting for a couple of magazines I contribute to. There is no accreditation process so I suppose only invited press will be able to attend - or none at all.
As an aside, if anybody is in a position to take me as a guest I will gladly pay the ticket price and make a contribution to the charity of their choice as a goodwill gesture. I would sell my mother to be at this event.

It's clearly not selling that well judging by the letter threatening to let in the plebs that has arrived on my doormat.
"plebs"... so no member of the public is allowed to have an interest or be an enthusiast for motorsport, unless a member of the Grrc ?! and you post this remark on pistonheads too...so you must think fellow pistonhead members are nothing more than "plebs" or think they are all members of the Grrc ?
Also if this fantastic looking new event was to be so sucessful, have you ever thought that goodwood would only open up and grow the event in the coming years to the public anyway?
Just look at the success of the silverstone classic... surely goodwood can not ignore the interest in 70's and 80's racecars back on a race track for ever.

Having been to the Silverstone classic in the last two years and loved the whole event in particular the 70 a and 80 s
F1 and others racing there I think it may well give Goodwood something to compete against .
Why not open it up to general public and car clubs as Silverstine does . Again it's rarely the warmest time of year!!.

It has been promoted as a membership perk. If they open it up to the general public / other car clubs, it makes them look daft. that would never do .F1 and others racing there I think it may well give Goodwood something to compete against .
