I always go on Thursday as it's much quieter and so a lot easier to look around at all the stands and talk to people. Depending on what else is happening that weekend I usually also go on Saturday or Sunday and mainly watch the cars going up the hill. That system seems to work pretty well for me.

Not sure I get the point of the GAS show. Just seems to be kids jumping bmx's and motorbikes. Once you've seen them do it once it all seems rather repetitive.

That could be said about watching cars go up a hill once you've seen one go up you've seen them all.....

I generally tie in lunch and a beer when a gas show is on, it is impressive what they can do on a bike.

If I'm honest I never get the chance to watch the cars go up the hill as there's always so much going on, so last year I made a special effort to watch some. I only managed half an hour though as unfortunately I did find it all rather repetitive and a bit dull frown

Quite similar to me really. I make a point of seeing the bikes, F1 cars and supercars; don't get chance to see much else. In the earlier days of FoS they did a lot more timed runs, and I think that made it more exciting to watch.

For the last 3/4 years I've done 2 days and that still isn't enough to see everything, I was hoping to camp this year and do all 4 days but a close friend has decided he wants to get married the Saturday of FOS, needless to say I'm tempted to tell him were no longer friends!!

Normally don't mind paying up for FOS but price keeps going up - anyone seen any deal or vouchers yet this year to help with the ticket sticker price?

Whilst I feel its good value for money considering other events like a football match or concert that lasts for just a few hours. I also have an eye for a good deal.

In previous years it's been closer to the event and generally a deal in the local paper. I think last year though you had to collect in person from the newspapers offices. Are you local?

Goodwood said:
This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed will attempt to answer, once and for all, a question that has been bugging generations of motor sport fans for many years – which is the fastest racing saloon?

Running in timed simulations up the fabled 1.16-mile Hillclimb during the 26-29 June event will be representatives from a plethora of different eras and championships from touring cars and stock car racing.

Historic machinery will be heavily represented with standout cars such as an Alan Mann Racing Ford Escort Mk1 and a Zakspeed Ford Cologne Capri will show the muscle of the Group 2 and Group 5 eras against several examples of more technically-advanced machinery.

Among the more technologically-advanced vehicles trying to beat the clock will be an ex-British Touring Car Championship Renault Laguna Super Touring machine and a pair of ultra-quick Mercedes-Benz DTM machines spanning the 1990s and 2000s.

Moving in to the modern era, several current World Touring Car Championship contenders will take to the hill, attempting to prove their mettle against the thunder of NASCAR and flame-spitting V8 Supercar racers from Australia.

Which will be fastest? Will the grunt and simplicity of the 1960s machines overthrow the electronically-advanced touring cars of 20 years ago? Or will the latest-specification tin-tops emerge on top? You’ll have to wait until the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, on 26-29 June, to find out.

Loeb aims to beat hillclimb record.

http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2014/03/20/loeb-aims-be...

Goodwood said:
Sebastien Loeb will try to beat the Goodwood Festival of Speed record time, which is currently held by an F1 car, at this year’s event.

Nick Heidfeld set the current record time of 41.6 seconds in a McLaren-Mercedes MP4-13 in 1999.

Formula One cars have been forbidden from tackling the hill at full speed since Heidfeld set the record 15 years ago.

Leob will try to beat the record in the Peugeot 208 T16 he won last year’s Pikes Peak hillclimb in America with. Its 3.2-litre V6 twin-turbo engine produces around 875bhp.

The nine-times world rally champion lowered the Pikes Peak record by a minute and a half after its surface was changed from gravel to tarmac.

This year’s Festival of Speed will also mark the 50th anniversary of John Surtees’s world championship victory.

Surtees became the first and only driver to win world titles for cars and motorbikes when he clinched the drivers’ title with Ferrari in 1964. A selection of his cars and bikes on display will include the Ferrari 158 he claimed the title in.

Emerson Fittipaldi will also drive a McLaren M23 of the type he won the world championship with 40 years ago.

The central feature in front of Goodwood House will be dedicated to Mercedes. Among their racing cars present will be their pre-war grand prix racers, Sauber-Mercedes C9 and CLK GTR sports cars, saloon and rally cars, and its current F1 team and drivers.

Mercedes-Benz to celebrates 120 years in Motorsport with Festival of Speed central sculpture.

Goodwood said:
The 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed will pay tribute to 120 years of achievement in motor sport by Mercedes-Benz with a spectacular Central Feature in its honour.
This year’s Central Feature, designed by renowned sculptor Gerry Judah, will be the most architecturally challenging and spectacular installation ever seen at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and is sure to be a visual highlight of the June 26-29 event.

Since its invention in 1886, the automobile’s performance potential and reliability have been put to the test time and time again: right from the very early days, Daimler and Benz vehicles were taking part in events in Europe and around the world - winning races and repeatedly setting new speed records. This year is also the centenary of the incredible victory in the 1914 French Grand Prix on the dust-covered roads around Lyon, where Mercedes racers beat Peugeot to record an historic one-two-three finish.

Of the Mercedes GP machines that enabled Christian Lautenschlager, Louis Wagner and Otto Salzer to take that spectacular victory on 4 July a hundred years ago, only three are still in existence. They will all be present for what is set to be the largest automotive garden party ever staged at Goodwood.

Mercedes motor sport success at all levels will be marked, with everything from GP-winning Silver Arrows of the pre-war years, to the monstrous Sauber-Mercedes C9 and CLK GTR sportscars of the 1980s and ’90s, plus saloon and rally cars, and the current F1 team and drivers, which have made such a strong start to the season.

Mercedes-Benz road cars will also feature prominently at the Moving Motor Show and in the Michelin Supercar Paddock – with cars from the mighty AMG division taking a lead role.

Goodwood owner Lord March said: “The theme of this year’s Festival of Speed is ‘Addicted to Winning’ and very few manufacturers embody that philosophy like Mercedes-Benz. To have been at the forefront of motor sport for 120 years is extraordinary and we’re proud to honour them with our most spectacular Central Feature ever in 2014.”

Michael Bock, Head of Mercedes-Benz Classic, said: “This Summer the Mercedes-Benz family is coming together to mark a remarkable milestone. Our support of Goodwood is long-standing and I’m excited to be stepping up our commitment in June for what promises to be a fitting celebration of Mercedes-Benz cars – both old and new.”

'F1 CHAMPIONS SURTEES AND FITTIPALDI HEAD SENSATIONAL LINE-UP'

Goodwood said:
A cavalcade of superstars from motor sport’s past and present will wow a capacity crowd at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 26-29, which celebrates the theme: ‘Addicted to Winning’.

Formula 1 world champions Emerson Fittipaldi and John Surtees, and Sebastien Loeb – the Frenchman the most successful driver in the history of FIA World Championship motor sport – will head an all-star line-up at Goodwood.

The 50th anniversary of Surtees’ 1964 F1 crown, which made him the only man to win world titles on two wheels and four, will be celebrated with a display of 11 cars and three motorcycles raced from his unique career; among them his championship-winning Ferrari 158.

Fittipaldi’s 1974 F1 World Championship – his second, and the first of 20 for McLaren – is now 40 years old. This milestone will be marked by the Brazilian driving one of his race-winning M23s from that season.

Frenchman Loeb, who has won a record nine World Rally titles and 78 individual rally wins, will drive Peugeot’s monstrous 208 T16 Pikes Peak car up the iconic 1.16-mile hillclimb in pursuit of Nick Heidfeld’s 41.6-second record that has stood since 1999. He will also drive a Citroen, for whom he is competing in this year’s World Touring Car Championship.

Richard Petty and Al Unser will bring American showmanship to the event. Indy car legend Unser will drive the 1978 Penske Lola-Cosworth in which he took the third of his record-equalling four Indy 500 victories. Meanwhile, NASCAR’s ‘King’ Richard Petty, with an astonishing 200 race wins and seven championships to his name, will get back behind the wheel of his most winning car of all – the #43 Plymouth Belvedere in which he won astonishing 27 races during the 1967 season.

The Le Mans 24 Hours plays a strong part in proceedings with multiple winners of the event – including the most successful driver in the history of the race, Tom Kristensen – taking to the hill in a variety of machinery. Joining the nine-time winner will be fellow Audi legend Emanuele Pirro, Derek Bell, Henri Pescarolo and a host of others, including new Porsche sportscar recruit Mark Webber.

Goodwood owner Lord March said: “To have assembled such a staggering line-up of drivers, who completely typify what the 2014 Festival of Speed theme – ‘Addicted to Winning’ – is all about, is an indication of the enduring appeal and popularity of the event. I’m incredibly excited about seeing the world’s greatest drivers reunited with some truly iconic vehicles.”

For me the biggest pain in the backside is that we wont get to hear the 2014 F1 cars.
I know that many people don't like the sound, but I would love to hear it myself.

CARTIER ‘STYLE ET LUXE’ CELEBRATES 20TH YEAR AT FESTIVAL OF SPEED

http://www.goodwood.co.uk/festival-of-speed/news-a...

Goodwood said:
The Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours d’elegance will celebrate its 20th appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year with an incredible display of exquisite automotive machinery across seven dedicated classes.

Situated on the Cartier Lawn, the concours d’elegance continues to be renowned as the definitive celebration of fine automotive design and the display assembled at Goodwood will be no exception.

Class 1 will feature junior pre-war sportscars from long-lost brands such as BNC, Riley and Amilcar, while Class 2 is dedicated to the Mercedes 500K, launched 80 years ago, and featuring a wide variety of exclusive coach-built bodies including coupes and cabriolets.

Maserati, which celebrates its centenary this year, packs out Class 3 with a display of exquisite 1950s grand tourers bodied by Pininfarina, Zagato, Frua and Allemano, while the ‘Mad Men’-inspired Class 4 features aspirational 1950s American two-seaters from Edsel, Cadillac and Mercury.

Mid-engined masterpieces that pre-dated what became known as supercars comprise Class 5, where you can expect to see examples of the Ford GT40 MkIII and McLaren M12 GT, plus the sensational Mazda RX500, while Class 6 celebrates the advent of the more-affordable ‘Pony Cars’, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the genre-defining Ford Mustang. Alongside Mustangs, Plymouth Barracudas and Dodge Challengers will feature heavily.

Class 7 will mark the growing interest in front-engined supercars of the 1990s, with the Lister Storm, Marcos LM600 and TVR Cerbera Speed 12 all expected to play a role.

Each beautiful car on display will be examined by an expert panel of distinguished judges, who will name a winner for each class and an overall winner.

http://www.goodwood.co.uk/festival-of-speed/news-a...

Goodwood said:
Supercars Battle Against the Clock and World Debut of New Honda NSX at Festival of Speed.

For the first time in Goodwood Festival of Speed history, supercars will battle against the clock as part of this year’s Michelin Supercar Run.

Road-going supercars will do battle in a bid to reveal which manufacturer produces the fastest production machine.

With representation from many of the world’s prestige manufacturers during the timed section on the Saturday afternoon of the event, an intense contest is guaranteed on the 1.16-mile hillclimb.

The Festival of Speed, now firmly established as the world’s leading outdoor automotive festival, will feature the global launch of Honda’s all-new NSX, which will be the first supercar to feature a three-motor hybrid powertrain.

Other new models appearing include Volvo’s new V60 Polestar – already a winner in race trim in Australia in its debut season and the Jaguar XFR-S Sportsbrake.

As ever, the Moving Motor Show, held on Thursday, 26 June, will be a hotbed of manufacturer involvement with presences confirmed by: Audi, BMW, Citroen, Dacia, Ferrari, Ford, GKN, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Rolls Royce, SEAT, Skoda, Toyota and Volvo.

MASERATI MARKS CENTENARY WITH LARGEST EVER DISPLAY AT FESTIVAL OF SPEED

http://www.goodwood.co.uk/festival-of-speed/news-a...

Goodwood said:
Maserati will celebrate 100 years as one of the world’s foremost luxury car manufacturers with a staggering display of cars from the past century at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed on 26-29 June.

More than 20 of the iconic machines will take part on the Goodwood hillclimb, which mixes the very best of motor sport and motoring at the world’s largest automotive garden party.

Established in Bologna on 1 December, 1914 by brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore and Ernesto Maserati, the first car to bear the name of the family – and the famous trident logo – was completed in 1926.

One of the earliest machines to roll off the production line; a Tipo 26B raced in 1928, an example of which competed at the Indianapolis 500, will be the oldest vehicle in the collection, which will have its own class at the 22nd Festival of Speed.

Maserati’s greatest motor sport achievement came in 1957 when Juan Manuel Fangio won the Formula 1 World Championship in a 250F. Two versions of the car, which was also driven to grand prix wins by Stirling Moss, will be present, along with other single-seaters from the pre- and post-war eras.

Maserati’s sportscar achievements will also be celebrated, including its four consecutive Targa Florio victories from 1937-40. Bringing the story right up to date will be former GT1 world champion Michael Bartels in a 2004-spec MC12, the type of machine in which the German has won the Spa 24 Hours on three occasions.

For those with an eye for automotive beauty as well as speed, the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ will feature a dedicated class of 1950s Maserati grand tourers. Proof, if it were needed, that the Modena marque has produced some of the most beautiful cars of all time, as well as some of the fastest.
