Supercar Sunday 4 May 2014
Discussion
I agree with the Evo list of Supercars but imagine it this way, you only have the Evo Supercars shown where we were parked on the track and after about 5 mins i would of been bored silly looking at the 40th 458! A bit of "supercar" variety was fine with me yesterday and looking at a supercharged mini and a Gordon Keeble rarety broke up the many Lambo Gallardo's and Fez 458's.
Looking at the list i though i had a supercar and was well chuffed until the Vantage Evo was on about was the old one! Damn!

I'm with you on most of your post, but define a Supercar in your mind'e eye please?
As stated the EVO list is a good place to start. My minds eye? Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani, Konigsegg, Gumpert, Carrera GT, MC12 Maserati, Maclaren. Of course this could start a whole new debate but....Z4's, Datsuns, MR2 replicas etc are not super and neither are they Supercars.

The wife and I parked up the car on Sunday in the paddock and walked to the main entrance to watch the cars arrive. There were a group of six 10-11 year olds and kids don't lie! "That's not a Supercar, neither is that, that's not either" They were pointing out the Datsun Cherry GTR's ( all 50 of them) the BMW Z4's et al, the boxsters ( I ve got two and they ain't supercars) the Audi RS, standard 996, Vauxhall UTEs, I mean Monaero or whatever it's called.
It's called Supercar Sunday and its got too many people kidding themselves, nobody wants to stand and look at a bloody boxster on Supercar Sunday. They do a soft top Sunday, a German Sunday, a Japanese Sunday etc etc. Yes goodwood gave out the passes but it's up to people to exercise some common sense. There was an MR2 based 360 on the grid and an F40 and Diablo GTR parked a mile away at the far end of the line up!
Someone is gonna call me a snob, NO, if I go to a good Italian restaurant I don't want Fu@in Sushi, I like Sushi but I went to an Italian. Everyone should come along and have a great day, which it was but should park in the carpark not fill the grid with Datsuns and 996 C2's. I mean even the Porsche guys don't need to see that, hence the prices ha ha!

It's a difficult one, one man's Porsche is another man's supercar - is my M5 a supercar? 562hp, 0-60 in 3.7 (according to Evo) and near on 200mph top speed. I'd say so, others wouldn't.
I think however, to make everyone happy perhaps there should be a definitive list and if your car's not on it, you can't be on track.
Your M5 would smash my testarossa, leave it for dead, 0-60 and top end. I drove one to the Belgium Grandprix last year, four up, with luggage and we got it to 182mph. It's really quick, handles superb and I loved it......want to see it at the German breakfast club. But I don't have a poster of it on my wall

That's actually quite a good way of defining the term - wanting a poster o f it on a wall Perhaps the vanilla porka's et al should not be given tickets but those such as the CGT, 4.0 GT3 should be in.
Agree, 360 kit cars really have no place on the day and I don't understand what Goodwood were thinking!
And the above is the whole thing about Supercars. The old 328's, 348's etc used to be Supercars and many still think that but cars like M3,5 and 6's would eclipse them in the performance stakes nowadays. The old performance standard is now accesible to the masses and a lot cheaper.
So rarity & price is more likely to achieve that supercar status than outright performance.
So rarity & price is more likely to achieve that supercar status than outright performance.
Similar point has been raised before about the standard of cars allowed onto the track. Used to be down the Marshalls discretion, but that seems to have stopped, since they weren't always right either.
Supercar definition
185mph+ 7750rpm+ No more than 3 seats (Probably 2 really. But the exception of McLaren F1) No taller than 1300mm
What you reckon?
btw No McLaren P1s there?

My first ever time at a breakfast club at Goodwood. Tbh it was really busy but I was in inside 30 minutes and I thought it was very organised indeed. My 2 year old loved it and spent 3 hours shouting 'Rarri' (Ferrari) 'Lamborgeenee' and 'Porsche' if you saw a big lump pushing an excited kid in a buggy that was me.
Andys F1 looked stunning and for some reason I thought it may be full of stone chips but it was immaculate and sounded awesome.
A great run out through Storrington from Brighton as I didn't want to take the boring A27 all the way only marred by a totalled TVR (Tuscan I think) anyone else see this???
I love the whole Goodwood thing. Loads of heritage and posh folk.
After looking at all these cars I really need to work harder.
I'll be back as it was brilliant

My Sunday started at around 4.45, nice clear morning and a fun quiet drive out. Didn't see thing on the way, but who is awake that early in the morning!
Got to the circuit at 6.30 where greeted with an F40 on the grid... moments later a 2nd arrives.
6.30AM, 2 Ferrari F40... you can tell it is going to be a good day!
Pagani Zonda F
Dodge Viper
Ferrari 458 Speciale, a GT-R and Enzo lurking
A Yellow Speciale
The 2 incredible McLaren F1 GTRs, WOW!
Nick Masons
Lamborghini Aventador LP720 Anniversary - Loved the colour and the sound.
GT3 RS (I'd assume Duggan as he said the Mrs was driving?)
Ferrari F40, 1 of I think 6? Will not tire of seeing them though!
A proper DTM'd CLK DTM
Carrera GT I assume imported at some point?
Aventador and V12 Vantage
And finally a lovely light blue/silver Aventador Roadster.
Brilliant morning out. No traffic either way. The only thing that could have made it even better would have been either a 918, LaFerrari, Huayra or McLaren P1 turning up. Maybe next year!
And finally a video from the day

There's always the Goodwood official list, as in what's allowed in the supercar parking area at the FOS - http://www.goodwood.co.uk/downloads/fos/2014/super...Gumpert, Carrera GT, MC12 Maserati, Maclaren. Of course this could start a whole new debate but....Z4's, Datsuns, MR2 replicas etc are not super and neither are they Supercars.
I think they got the Supercar Sunday bang on this year - in previous years when you just turned up, you were at the whim of a marshall knowing his arse from his elbow. One year I went in my NSX and made it past the first marshall at the main entrance (who was busily waving all sorts of other stuff straight on to go & park in the field), then there was another guy who determined if you go right and park by the Tesco building, or left and go onto the grid/paddocks. He obviously liked Astons as a good dozen or so Vantages were waved grid-ward, whilst Porsche UK's own 997 GT2 and a rather splendid RS200 were sent into the plebs car park. Needless to say, words were had with the main man, and they tootled back out and onto the grid
Anyway, the Supercar Sunday theme is just that - the main attraction. It shouldn't preclude there being other nice/interesting/rare cars there, as long as they are appropriately sectioned.
It's cool that they opened up the track all the way up the Lavant straight so they could accommodate more cars than most people would wish to see. And having been to a few of these before, along with Wilton, PHSS etc, I have to confess to getting a bit blasé - oh look, another 458, another £100/200+k car that's somebody's P&J but it's the 10th one I've seen today. Allowing in some stuff that's a bit unusual just makes it all the more special.
I went with a friend who'd never been to Goodwood before, and he was blown away - by the variety, and his favourites were the E-types. Is a V12 auto series III a supercar? Maybe not, but it's still worth a look for some people.
