Goodwood FOS 2014 - The Reaction!
Discussion
I went Friday and Saturday, second year having been on just Friday in 2013.
- More stalls than last year it seemed - although last year was seemingly the odd one out
- F1 paddock probably better slightly more seperated although it was still a bit of a nightmare to see anything much - I have a better view of the lower paddock from the Sky Sports platform, looking away from the track
- Watched the shootout on Sky on sunday and thought it was a total shambles - filling for ages (I assume due to incidents on track), and then the cars in no particular order, after Loeb had set the obviously fastest time - shame.
- Rally stage seemed knackered after Friday, and I was surprised they didn't try and tidy it up a bit for the saturday.
- Despite the warnings, the weather was fantastic - I don't think it rained at all friday/saturday did it?
- No traffic problems!
Went on the Sunday and had a brilliant day. It really is a full day of entertainment and less than a premiership football match (which lasts only 90mins).
Only shame was this year having a pram it meant crossing the circuit difficult as it inevitably didn't stick to plan. But the plus side was me and my wife did lots of exercise.
Favourites parts were;
Sitting in the TS040
Meeting Natalie Pinkham
Setting the fastest time on Gran Turismo in the drivers club (though eventually got beaten down to 3rd).
Only downside to the whole event was the M25 traffic from J10-J20. Ouch.

Just how do you expect to 'tidy up' a worn rally track without shutting it for a week?- More stalls than last year it seemed - although last year was seemingly the odd one out

Loeb had to be away by 5pm hence his position after the mid afternoon delays (as a result of which we only got 1 run from him on the rally stage in the afternoon).
Fabulous 3 days but I'm knackered now so just Friday +1 next year I think.

Wonderful weekend, as always. Seemed slightly quieter than previous years, perhaps the threat of bad weather keeping people away, but turned out fantastic in the end.
One huge point of praise I would like to make is how disabled-friendly the event seems to be - I went with my sister for a couple of the days who is in a wheelchair, and it seems that every possible effort was made to make it as easy as possible to enjoy the day. We were driven from the car park straight in and dropped off near the motability stand, staff on the big trade stalls went out of their way to move things, open doors, generally make life a bit less problematic. People even moved out of the way to let her in near the track crossings so she could see, and the marshals made sure to let people with chairs and kids in pushchairs cross first when the crossings opened.
Unfortunately, and this was more of a problem on Saturday and Sunday and mostly when the F1 cars were on the hill, it was usually impossible to get onto the raised viewing platforms due to them being filled with clearly non-disabled people who weren't accompanying anyone else on the platform. Maybe having a steward at the ramp of each one like with the grandstands might solve this? Aside from that little niggle, it was great, she was delighted having Mad Mike and the GAS athletes signing her wheels, and bloody loved the weekend as far as I can tell.

First time going this year and my girlfriend managed to break her big toe badly earlier in the week meaning she needed crutches and almost didn't go but figured as the weather looked good for the sunday we would just find a spot to sit for the majority of the day and not walk around much. Didn't know about disabled parking or anything but just asked when we turned up if we could park a bit closer but still ended up miles away until a couple told us about the courtesy cars, then one of the VIP cars (I think, nice big A8 Lwb anyway) stopped and gave us a lift to the disabled car park and then another car took us from their straight to the gate. When my gf realised how big an event it was we decided it would be best to get one of the motability scooters, and so glad we did as we wouldn't have seen a fraction of the stuff we did without it. We were able to park it up and use her crutches on the stands and stuff but all the walking in between would have got tiring pretty quick. Guys renting out the scooters were brilliant as well and we got a lift straight from the gate right back to the car at the end of the day. All in all made things a lot easier and everyone was very accommodating.
We sat at the disabled viewing point at the startline for a bit and we felt a bit awkward as more wheelchairs turned up and made room so they could all get to the front but when the old F1 cars started going up everyone seemed to be coming up, if we hadn't been sitting there already we wouldn't have bothered trying to get in as there was so many people standing about.

We got out of the car parking in minutes which was good but the M25 was painful.Trophybloo said:

reason for said delay on sunday... bales and stakes needed replacing after the Unser Camaro went head on into it! the marshals were picking pieces of glass and headlights out of the bales! they worked quite rapid considering! Trophybloo said:

Throw some hardcore down with one of the many jcbs in the forest. Nothing major- just a quick fettle. As for the shoutout.. I understand it was a difficult day in terms of delays so I guess nothing could be done
Any news on the winners of the Cartier concours? I know the answer to this quesiton but not sure if it's official or been published yet. Can't believe how good the Lincoln Continental was in addition to the the Mazers which were beyond stunning.... Still can't believe the Lincoln won me over, never thought that would be possible.
An excellent weekend though, way better than I expected. Definitely an issue in terms of respect for the cars. I nearly pulled mine out of the competition at one point and had to insist on "do not touch" signs being used. Such a shame but couldn't risk the car getting damaged. I even saw a bunch of idiots getting into the Peugot concept car.... ridiculous. So sad but I can see the event being more regulated in future. Still the best car event in the world IMO.

wonUnlike me to cut the March enterprises any slack but hardcore and rollering wont do rutted powdery chalk - Needs to be quarried chalk and allowed to bed in for several weeks. Instead of the small flint missiles you'd get lumps of half brick and concrete thrown up

Fair point then I guess. There was a lot being chucked up on the field section at the start anyway which wasn't cool. Maybe as the previous poster said - there's not a lot that could have been done. I guess the dry/wet/dry/wet weather didn't help leading up to the weekend.Unlike me to cut the March enterprises any slack but hardcore and rollering wont do rutted powdery chalk - Needs to be quarried chalk and allowed to bed in for several weeks. Graham your car looked stunning, it made my day to see a TVR in the Cartier Style et Luxe An excellent weekend though, way better than I expected. Sadly you're right about the people who go there. I thought the Peugeot concept was wonderful and I was looking in the passenger side I heard some numbskulls remarking, "Oh look at the leather, it's all worn out!" "Yeah, had a hard time that one!" etc. I thought the interior was just perfect, obviously they've never heard of patina. But worse still showed no appreciation of what they were looking at.
Needless to say I heard the usual dross when admiring your car, "Is it a TVR?" "Yeah a mate of mine 'ad one of those and it kept breaking down..." etc. etc. repeat until bored.
The TVR did us proud. I didn't pick up on anything negative being said but maybe I was lucky. A few people commented on how impractical the CS12 must be!!.. I couldn't resist intervening on the standard comment about speed bumps. To be fair not many people know the front end is cleverly designed to ride up over the top of them. A bit scary when you do this but it does work very well at least on the smaller sleepy boyz in blue. Essentially the front end body work lifts upwards against a couple of damper type devices. This puts the front end back down again after riding up over the top. Maybe easier to see than explain. I don't think this little feature has been written about before so that will be another factoid to add to the collection....

First time at FoS and it was amazing. A bit crammed in some places but if you walked about a bit you could find a nice place to sit and watch. The mound on the straight that goes towards the flint wall was where I watched a lot of the action from.
Loved all the different things going on. Didn't get to see some of it. Loved that the manufacturers really put on a bit of an effort with their massive pop up structures. Even better that some of the F1 teams and even Kimi turned up to showcase their stuff as well.
Really liked the NASCAR boys, real crowd pleasers. The Kiwi in the RX-7 drift machine was immense, the C6.R wins the prize for best sound and Jann Mardenborough had the best drive. Was also lovely to see Hill's FW18 go up the hill too.
Vulcan made an appearance as well...say no more!
One of the best bits was at the end. I was expecting bedlam trying to get out of Goodwood but it was completely painless! Well done the organisers. There wasn't even a horrible queue to get in either!
Some bad bits... the programme cost £15. Really? didn't bother, but there was no alternative. No cheaper version that came without all the crap like a flimsy ear piece radio. Even just a sign post with the itinerary on would have been nice. But other than that its an extremely well run event!
Not so good things...
Food prices. We took our own because I had a feeling it might be rape. £7 for a crummy burger van burger? pull the other one! Think we paid £3 odd for 99 ice cream and it was the smallest thing I've ever seen.
Sheer number of people seemingly watching the whole event through their cameras and smart phones. Seriously, a guy in front of me recorded every single car on his black berry. Why? when you get home all you'll have a is a low bit rate video with terrible distorted sound. Put it back in your pocket and watch with your eyes man!
There was a young lad with a go pro on a stick, he probably watched the whole thing through the wifi link to his iPhone! I took my camera, of course I did, but I took about 20 photos for the whole day. Better to just sit back and experience it all properly.

The rally stage was terrible from Friday onwards. I went out on the stage on Friday in a mk2 escort and it felt like it was grounding out on half of it then. Still bloody good fun though. Sunday afternoon most of the cars bar LandRovers & WRC stuff had given up. Maybe Goodwood should look at re-surfacing it for next years FoS ? other than that if was another great year at Goodwood.
Yeah I pretty much heard the same thing. I wasn't there on Sunday but it's a shame if it kept people away. I heard late Friday the rally paddock tannoy putting out a 'call to arms' telling exhibitors to get to the start so I guess they were struggling to get anyone out at times!By the way, in terms of a 'Goodwood moment', seeing thousands watching the hillclimb get distracted by the vulcan was pretty amazing. I was just outside the F1 paddock when everyone stopped and watched. A kid next to me said (genuine quote) 'Dad, what the HELL is that?!' . Takes something special to get that kind of reaction from everyone.
