The most bizarre costume I saw yesterday was the man dressed as a sort of cartoon Cardinal, but the best military uniform was the bearded gentleman in naval uniform complete with white polo neck sweater and binoculars- every inch the submarine captain

I saw an ordinary Catholic priest, The Pope and an Archbishop. Just hope they didn't encounter the group of 30-something blokes dressed as a cub pack!
Two blokes dressed as dogs on Friday presumably were 40s LoonyTunes characters.

Nope, nearer to Cricket Test Match Fridays. Also this year saw my first transvestite / transgender person swanning around looking like a rugby player in a frock! Think it was meant to be serious, unlike the Kenny Everett lookalike with fake boobs and full beard

Just see the contrast between these lovely ladies and the "lady" on the right.

No, you shouldn't confuse them with loudmouthed chav's at the FoS.
99% of those who dress up at the Revival are +/- period accurate.
The 1% in fancy dress at least try to wear somehing time appropriate, even if it is clear that you wouldn't have seen the Pope at Goodwood in the '50's wink. At least they made me laugh.
It is not a reenactement and without wanting to make a "freak show" out of it, if we start taking the Revival too seriously and frown upon all those whose colour of trousers, hat or whatever is not "right", we will quickly take the fun out of the entire event.

Rose coloured specs I'm afraid, ecurie. 40-45% are +/- period accurate (40s to 60s). 40% are modern social event clothing wearers. My schadenfreude knows no bounds when I see women nursing sore ankles and feet from wearing wholly inappropriate footwear. Ladies with major tatoos on their back wearing 50s sun dresses look just as chav as any FoS shorts and t-shirt wearer (in fact they were on the increase this year). It isn't hard to get to nodding distance of the required style without being slavish, but the modern coloured trouser, 'accountant on his day off' look is just as jarring as the Vodafone silver and orange garb.
Still on the bright side we were spared the March girl singing this year wink

I think the singlet wearer has spent all weekend at the free samples available from the shop, too!

It was my first visit to the Revival (have been to 3 FOS, and a few Breakfast Clubs/Sunday Services), I was surprised how many people hadn't made an effort at all.

I didn't go all out, but at least tried, and felt both part of it, but also less grumpy. All those in sportswear etc. just looked a bit miserable, and like they thought dressing up was silly

Well done to those that go all out, it really makes the event

Well.. I was there on Friday and Saturday and a massive majority had put in the effort to dress as I expected for the spirit of the event. Friday especially I saw very few people in modern clothes. Not sure if it was a different story for Sunday?

I disagree. If I take a photo an produce it in black and white the chap in his red trousers and jacket looks fine, the guy in his jeans Vodafone branded t-shirt does not.

smile whatever tone you render them in, the Henley look still makes them look out of place. The Hooray is just as unacceptable as the chav, especially when they need a damn good haircut and have their nitty kids in tow!

I went on Friday and Sunday and my feeling was there were less people on Sunday who had come appropriately dressed. I've no idea why that should be.

There did seem more people that didn't make the effort to dress up this year, but I think quite a few (mainly the women) may of regretted it as on more than one occasion you could see some envious glances at those that had dressed up and quite simply looked stunning.

Perhaps those that were there for the first time, didn't know quite what to expect and would dress up next year.

It's a fun event and I think the whole vintage thing adds to it. I just need to get a vintage case for my camera for next year now ! wink

Yes, there definitely were more people in jeans etc this year, but I wonder if many of them were first-timers. I've been coming to the Revival since '98, but it wasn't until a few years back that I realised that I really needed to make an effort - even when popping down for a day on my own.

I noticed many trans-atlantic and European voices dressed 'normally' this year, so I'd probably be inclined to cut them some slack... I'd hope that if they were ever to return, it would be in some form of period dress...?

I thought I was attending an historic motor racing event - I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition!
