Dear fans,

I'd like to update you about the driver from the Lola T70 in car number #2 which crashed yesterday during the Bruce McLaren Trophy at the 74th MM at Goodwood. He is my dad and in consultation with other family members we decided to give you some information. He is a bit shaken and bruised, but conscious. Apart from the abrasions and cuts he has broken a rib and two vertebrae. The good thing is that there isn't any damage to the spinal cord. Let's hope he'll recover soon!

If there is anyone who has some more information, video's or other imagery please contact me at samvanderwerff@hotmail.com
This would be really valuable for us.

Thank you so much for your support and information.

Kind regards,

Sam van der Werff
That is good news. Best wishes to your dad and the family and I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Regards,

Ed

As others have said, very pleased to hear that your father is ok. I was at the circuit yesterday and could see from afar the immediate aftermath of your father's crash. Like many, I've been scanning the news/social media today hoping to hear positive news so thank you for the update. I wish him a very speedy recovery to full health.

That's great news Sam. What a relief. The absence of information to the public and the fact that all racing was stopped for so long made us fear the worst.

I wish him and your family all the best.

Best regards,

Jeroen

Hi Sam,

That is fantastic news, thank you for posting. I too was at the exit of Woodcote with my daughters and saw the accident. Given what we witnessed, your positive news comes as a great relief and we wish your father a full and speedy recovery.

Best regards, Al

That is wonderful news Sam.

I hope your father makes a full and speedy recovery and that we see him at the next members meet.

I crashed myself on the Lavant straight in the members sprint a few years ago but was lucky enough to walk away unscathed. So all my fingers and toes were crossed hoping for a good outcome for your father on Sunday.

I was 10m away when this happened. I can only say I am very happy and relieved your Father is even alive let alone in reasonable condition. Great news - I wish him a speedy recovery.

Sounds like very good news, I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery!
I was shocked to see the car on the back of the recovery truck and like many others feared the worst.

Many thanks for taking the time to post here and hope you get any information you require.

Great news Sam, thank you a for the update. As all ready stated the lack of information was scary but just so glad to hear he is okay. Please do pass on a message of support.

To Michael

Don't rush back but I think I speak for all of us when I say that we can't wait to see you racing again at Goodwood and else where!

Fantastic news that your father's on the road to recovery. I was there but didn't see the accident, but have pictures very similar to Matt's and feared the worst. Have been trying to find out what happened to the driver all day as the commentary team didn't give us much to go on, so I'm very relieved (though not as much as yourself I'd imagine!).

What hill?
If you meant the hill coming down from the racecourse towards the house, I noticed a lot of concrete dust and debris lying in the verges.
Yep. 200m down the hill from the racecourse on the Goodwood side of the hill.
There was a big accident there on Saturday night. That route was closed and a couple of fire engines were going in that direction when we were leaving the circuit at approx 19:30ish (did not look too closely at my watch!)

Ed
That may explain why the A286 northbound from Lavant was at a standstill about 7.15.

I wish a speedy and full recovery to the Lola and Lotus drivers.
