Goodwood Revival: "Over The Road" no longer free admission.

I see this morning on the SADCASE news feed:

It's discussed here - confirms that Over the Road needs circuit ticket this year.

I can expect chaos on the roads through people arriving without a ticket. I can see the plus and minuses for it and I'm sure it will be fine next year but this year I expect carnage.

On the other thread I think it was, tickets aren't checked til after car parking so roads shouldn't be any worse than usual (unless people try to turn round and go home at 0930 when they realise!)

I wonder how many people have blagged it in previous years? I have, mostly when I have a ticket for 1 day but go and have another day round the pre 75 carpark (I don't live far away) but I wouldn't imagine thousands doing it, you'd have to have been as a paying customer to sus out that you can go over the road for free.

I believe so but aren't the roads and entrances mainly geared up for incoming motorists until mid afternoon with just a single route for drop offs?

Not sure that's entirely true having spoken to a couple of people running some stands. You're right in saying that people were checked (I certainly was), but ticketless people were let in by some security points - apparently after agreeing that they would pay from next year onwards. Did you see anyone being refused entry and turning back home?

There was a couple who had got off a bus, had their tickets checked didn't have them so turned around looking puzzled.

Seems it caused a bit of confusion and I heard that the ticket check for over the road from the car park was abandoned on Saturday afternoon .

It's a real shame. I guess the vendors weren't over impressed (I guess there used to be people who rocked up to drool in the car park & enjoy a burger & a beer.

I'm somewhat surprised at this sudden ticket only situation and find it hard to understand why it wasn't implemented before if it has always been so. It's a shame as it was nice and relaxed.

We usually do the Festival of Speed earlier in the year and just do "over the Road" for an hour or so whilst recovering from the financial stress of the family summer holiday. Been going since Over the Road first started, we only live a mile & half down the road so go along after doing the things that need doing at the weekend. We chuck on some period style clothes and spend a bit of money on rides, trinkets and food, drink etc and enjoy the ambience & classic car park.

We went because the story in the local area is that admission was free, so why miss it ? not because we are freeloaders or cheapskates. Lots of my friends and colleagues have also been over the last few years and we all spend a bit. I can understand the traders being a bit miffed. We usually spend about £50-£60. Not a massive amount but that multiplied a few hundred times adds up.

If the Revival wasn't selling out I would understand the clampdown. I'd be interested to see what effect this had on the road traffic numbers.

Anyway I suppose I'm £60 better off today.

Yep, a guy a few in front of me was turned away on Sat morning.

It was a lot easier to walk around and get a seat to eat and drink something this year over the road.
Also the traffic was a lot lighter leaving both on Saturday and Sunday so by the council restricting numbers personally for us it was better.
We did have our tickets checked by a lovely young lady when we were 30 metres into the event

i don't really know when OTR actually became a "thing" ... as far as I can tell, the "carpark" just slowly had more and more things added to it and it was made into a small event in itself... goodwood should've acted earlier though to move the ticket checks...

Just to say I'm glad the Over the Road stuff is for ticket holders now. Should always have been the case but obviously chatter on Pistonheads etc. gave people the idea of just browsing round the car park. All in all a good change.
