Things around goodwood

Hi,

Have a camping pass for the weekend and whilst have tickets for Friday and Saturday with friends I am planning to travel down and spend a relaxing Thursday in the local area before the event.

Any suggestions for dad and a 16yo to do? The Tangmere military museum looks interesting but nothing else jumps out. Have a car and so 45mins-1hr from goodwood would work.

I know obvious answer is to buy Thursday tickets but fancy something different and complimentary….

If you mean Tangmere airfield museum , it's very interesting. Arundel is a nice place to wonder around as is Chichester.

Tangmere is good

Thursday in the FOS is the (half, by the time we get there) day that we go in and do all the stalls and have a good wander round, it's slightly less busy and we then plan the next few days which are pretty bonkers. There's a few things going up the hill but quite a bit are the manufacturers taking clients for a spin.

The Armouries museum on top of Portsdown Hill? Great views, and a very good tea van with views( no, not the terrible Micks Monster burgers, but Route 66 in the airstream caravan)

Not sure why you’d go there over a wander round Chichester or a day trip to Brighton.

Hayling or Witterings for a beach option, Bognor if you want to catch something when away on holiday

Pompey docks if you want to see naval stuff is good but expensive for a day out imho, we bought tickets and used them all year and nothing else much there other than Gunwharf quays to get more camping gas.

Jungle Paradise Adventure Golf at Chichester Golf Club is alright for a giggle if you're staying local, or if you do head to Pompey there's all the usual seaside tat at Clarence Pier

The Weald and Downland Museum at Singleton is worth a visit. Umpteen interesting British (English? Not sure) buildings dismantled and rebuilt on the site. Preferably when it's not raining.

Having lived in the area for 50+ years i would agree with this. Great day out with Victory, Mary Rose, Warrior, Harbour tour etc plus nice walk along Hot walls. You can grab a bite to eat in Gunwharf Quays before heading back.

Thanks all, some good suggestions there. Portsmouth harbour or the aviation museum look to be the best bets.

Off topic but egarding the houses rebuilt we have a similar one a short walk from the house - St Fagans museum of welsh history. A great day out for anyone in South Wales…

Another +1 for the historic dockyard. Probably one of the best museums in the country outside of London. I would always pick that over the dive that is Brighton.

Royal armouries is very good and free but with traffic busy for FOS the train would be a sensible option and drops you at the front door of the museum.

You do have the Weald and down land museum behind goodwood where the repair shop is filmed but that’s a bit more sleepy than most of the other suggestions.

Amberley working museum is really interesting, industrial heritage set in an old quarry. Have a ride on a vintage bus, steam train, various workshops, sawmill etc.

Arundel is nice for lunch and a wander, nice boating lake with rowing boats and various pubs, cafes etc. the castle gardens are impressive but it’s a bit expensive to get in.

West wittering beach is stunning if you want to go to the seaside.

The castle is really nice but as Matt said very expensive.

The wittering you now need to book before going as they were having a lot of traffic issues. I think this has reduced it but not removed the problem.
