Goodwood FoS - Saturday cancelled
Discussion
I'd imagine this all comes down to the event insurers... as soon as you have close to 50mph winds forecast, it simply can't open the doors. There will be a break point where it's cheaper to refund the tickets, versus what could potentially arise through liability claims.
A shame, but that's the great British summer for you.
The poster above going to Mercedes Benz World - Brooklands is just next door across the river Wey, and is a lovely museum to spend a few hours wandering round.

Pretty understandable- camped there until late yesterday and bailed before cancellation announcement late yesterday - saved tent and avoided mud and toilets at campsite
Even with all the metal walkways there was a lot of water and mud and the 25% or so public seating with cover was pretty uncomfortable in yesterday’s winds
Better to sort refunds (ticket only) than put on horrible day with umbrellas and other stuff flying all over the place

We were going to be heading down today, 06.40 flight to Gatwick, car hire, hotel and then return flight… quite a cost.
I take it there is no way to recoup travel costs due to event cancellation?
Thought not. ??

Travel insurance? Goodwood's liability will only extend to the entry ticket etc and they have confirmed they will refund those (and even then I would imagine that's good will, they probably have a force majeure clause).I take it there is no way to recoup travel costs due to event cancellation?

I've not been to FOS for 20 years so I'd imagine the temp structures and champers tents have grown considerably since then, but I marshalled at FOS from '94 to '01, and I can remember a cold, very wet and very windy year once when marshalling....maybe '96?
It was more like marshalling on the RAC Rally in November than Goodwood in July.....we were marshalling just up from the speed trap beyond the house entrance, and the highest speed through the trap was Juha Kankannen who came through the speed trap in a works Repsol Escort Cossie, sideways, half on the grass, and still about 10mph faster than any other car had gone past

Well my travel insurance exclusions ( Staysure Ins) exclude single night accommodation in UK… must be min 2 nighter) so once again, shafted by terms and conditions and small print… Insurer 1. Punter 0ch37 said:

We're just putting it the "very disappointed, but there you go" category, and keeping our fingers crossed that Flying Legends still goes ahead tomorrow. At least I've not had to drive 9 hours today..but that's little consolation.
For now at least, the weather down here doesn't seem anywhere near as bad as last night's forecasts were predicting.
It's a bt breezy for sure, but being reported as gusts of [only] 40mph-45mph - bright & sunny at times, too..
I imagine those responsible for the cancellation will be hoping it doesn't get much better..

It says on the front of the tickets "No refunds given" among other things, so I'm grateful they have conceded this. It's not Goodwood's fault; if they had gone ahead and someone got hurt or worse with flying debris, then that decision would have looked incredibly stupid. At least they made the decision yesterday, and stated the decision wouldn't be reversed even if weather conditions improved.

Looking at weather forecast, Legends is looking bleak for today, suspect a lot of stuff won't fly, but better for tomorrow, although some stuff might not be able to fly as gust speeds still at 30-odd mph. We're just putting it the "very disappointed, but there you go" category, and keeping our fingers crossed that Flying Legends still goes ahead tomorrow. The Me262 and BBMF have already cancelled flying for both days at RIAT due to wind limits.

According to the forecast on my iPhone yesterday, it didn't seem too bad at all. There was a yellow warning for wind, but I'd have thought that marquees etc. of the type used at big events like Goodwood would be easily rated to cope with that. I was surprised when I got the first warning text message. It's a bt breezy for sure, but being reported as gusts of [only] 40mph-45mph - bright & sunny at times, too..

Thinking positively for those attending Sunday, the reduction in forecast windspeeds at least hopefully means the site should get through today without too many issues. Given this is forecast until late tonight they really didn't have much time to fix stuff before 7am tomorrow if any significant damage or issues cropped up.It's a bt breezy for sure, but being reported as gusts of [only] 40mph-45mph - bright & sunny at times, too..

Hopefully the weather will improve this afternoon for the folks there today - according to my report there's a thunderstorm there right now.

They’ll pop over there if there’s time later. They’ve had a result so far, MB pulled the FOS team back to MBW so they’re getting to see some decent stuff anyway!Edited by bristolbaron on Saturday 15th July 11:47

FYI it will be the risk assessment BUT also linked to insurance conditions.
Our local famers market has to be cancelled if the forecasts are above 30mph as a condition of their liability insurance (ok, different scale but same principle)
The summer fair in my Mother's village has been cancelled too. They are citing insurance as the reason. I see Longleat is closed today as well. Our local famers market has to be cancelled if the forecasts are above 30mph as a condition of their liability insurance (ok, different scale but same principle)
It's alternating between bright sunshine and heavy showers where we are (near Bristol), but the harbour festival is going ahead, albeit not as busy as usual.
