Thought Gary Paffett setting fire to the SLR's brakes was quite funny.

I get really fed up with those comments about how great it was in t'tut good old days, this happens with Le Mans and GOS and anything else that is an annual event.

This change this progress and move on.

Er.....

"The event has become much more commercial and sells as much as an entertaining day out for the family these days, but I feel this is the inevitable price of success - and the Revival remains more for petrolheads if thats what your looking for.
What it hasn't lost is the wonderful spread of machinery running up the hill and top notch static displays that were the events USP in the first place so it'll always remain worth going."

And anyway I was not aiming my comments at you, I think your reply was balanced.

I'm sure once you have been a few times the buzz wears off.
I could not beleive what a fantastic place it was and how I had never made the 1 hour trip before

I'm glad you see the balance Whilst it is fair for me to say that its perhaps not as wonderous as it once was, in the grand scheme of things its still ABSOLUTELY BL00DY BRILLIANT!! I had a great time, again.

Did anyone else have a go the Rage Buggies which were up near car park M? I had a couple of goes, just great fun and really quite responsive to left foot braking

Miy first time at FOS and I loved it. It was nice to see plenty of different cars from different eras and be able to get up close and touch them.. For me the BRM V16 was the high point.. Even though on the Saturday afternoon it was only running on eight or sometimes sixteen cylinders. One show that I'd certainly go to again.

It is like nothing else iv ever been to, i certainly wasnt trying to say it was rubbish, the old days just capture a special moment in my life, i also remember spending most of one of the FOS sat in the car as it was chucking it down all weekend. iv been every year and i love it and will continue to go, plus the rally stage is a great new addition and well worth the walk. here's a few pics...

This was the 6th year I've been and where else will you see:
Mansell, Moss, Hill, Brabham, Surtees, McNish, Arnoux, Jones, Stewart, Rosberg Jr, Senna Bruno, Button, Ickx, Bell and more
- all up close and personal, and all on the same day! In fact, most of them all stood side by side at prize giving!
Result? My lad almost filled his autograph book, I drained the batteries in my camera, filled the memory card, got properly sunburnt, got properly wet, and actually spent £6 on a burger.
It's like reliving every day I spent at Silverstone as a lad, all in one day again. Wonderful.
Roll on next year.....

Was my first time at the FOS and it was bloody marvelous!
Loved the big screens so that you can see all of the runs not just the bit in front of you.
Only slight damper on the event was the guy who came off the honda on saturday morning couldn't find out if he was ok and was very surprised that the commentary didn't mention it at all. Does anyone know if he was ok?

Have to say I am with the grumblers on this one!
Whilst it certainly wasn't a bad event by far (it's the best weekend in my motoring calender) it certainly didn't have the same aura about it this year as it has done previously.

There seemed to be a much greater manufacturer presence this year as it's gained much greater reputation and there was just too many people to fully enjoy the pits/racing. To me it felt like the passion behind the organisation wasn't as strong as before (which was neatly summed up by the frankly awful central display).

I hope that it doesn't go down the road of a pure money making/corporate day out like the Grand Prix as it's a truely great event for petrolheads and should stay loyal to the original ethos.

The one thing that always impresses me is the parking/traffic situation - very well managed and not a pain in the slightest.

It is a great weekend and I will certainly go again, but having known what went might be a hinderance

Also, I might check out the Revival this year as it sounds good. Are you still required to go in period dress? Best get searching for a nice cravat...

I avoided the crowds by goign down to Cathedral - there were times there when the mechanics and drivers outnumbered the spectators. And the cars were far more interesting as well.

..by far the best bit of the festival and happily ignored by most of the ignorant, chavvy element. I was following a couple of blokes walking past the Style et Luxe - "no point bothering going in there, its full of old crap..."

my favorite paddock too, those Targa Florio cars

The revival is not strict period clothing but its good to dress up a bit, an amazing event!

Hadn't seen this thread until a day, so a bit belated I know, but I thought it was great this year. The F1 boys were a little tamer than usual, although I may have just been at the wrong place at the wrong time, but we did see the spectacle of Kovalaven absolutely gunning the renault up the hill - on Saturday at least, and that was great to see someone really trying in F1 car. The only negative I could say was that I was dissapointed in the 'scultpure', this year it just seemed to be a tent with not too much thought behind it (I'm sure there was) but I much prefer cars suspended in the air.

I don't think it was as good, anyone else agree?
Too many people, supercar run was a non event, F1 cars didnt play silly bu55ers, might just be me but I didn't get into at all this year.

Supercar run always is a non-event IMO... I don't go to GFoS to see supercars or current F1 cars.

It's the old sportscars and F1 cars I want to see... things like the Targa Florio, Can Am's... even the older F1 cars (nowt like a Ferrari V12).

Its too busy now, becoming a victim of its own success which is a double edged sword i guess, attracts more cars I suppose but makes it harder to see things.

Have to agree with this comment.

Went on the Saturday for the 1st time , and found it seriously difficult to see anything worthwhile on the hill climb without resorting to standing by the big screens all day...

Maybe more 'general public grandstands' would go some way to help...

I love all the Goodwood events and this one was fab, just not as fab as previous ones.

This was my, erm, fifth or sixth. The best one in my opinion was the Ford centenary one with all the GT40s, Cobras etc.

All my mates commented that this was the weakest one that we've been to and, to be honest, the sculpture in front of the house was bobbins!!

Overall, still loved it though as the car going up the hill is only part of it...

When it comes to moving on and progress, etc. not all progress is good and I think people can be slaves to 'moving things on.' Some things really do go downhill over time.

I don't know what FoS was like when it was more raw say 7 or 8 years ago, but it sounds cool and I do honestly miss the crazy battle for the fastest times that went on only 2 or 3 years ago. It's pure posturing by guys that drive superbly and I loved that element (Anthony Reid in his Primera was up for it though!) It is becoming a bit of a drive by for the PR people, which is a shame. It's not just me, all the 15 people I went with that said this - all under 35 y/o by the way!!

Last year was 'A+', this year was 'B-'. Can't wait 'til next year and an undoubted return to form - I'll deffo be there in 07....and the year after.....and the year after.....

As an aside, I had some nosh in the Goodwood Kennals restaurant directly behind the House on the Saturday night and saw the fireworks. Awesome (bloody good grub as well). If you get the chance and can book early enough, do it.

My photies are on:
