Dior's 1947 New Look, celebrating the end of the war year's austerity and rationing, reflecting the optimism of people for a better future, would be a fine choice for any lady:

Incidentally, does anyone here frequent the Oulton Park Gold Cup?

Because I've often though that, with a little bit of organisation, it could complement the Goodwood Revival rather well.

Thing is, whilst Goodwood is 1948-1964, the cars at Oulton Park Gold Cup are roughly 1964-1986 (Group B rally demonstrations this year!).

They already segregate the car park, so modern cars are parked in a separate area to classic cars giving certain areas a mid-'60s-mid-'80s feel (nothing like watching a Lotus 23 screaming round Paddock hill whilst spectating between a bright yellow Europa and a gold Cortina 1600E with a vinyl roof).

If they added to that a dress code that spanned the 'swinging '60s' era, via rally jackets and flares to the sort of ex-Oxbridge City types with their early Range Rovers and green wellies, that'd be great (plus some Group B-era day-glo rally jackets). Not deliberately competing with Goodwood, but complimenting it.

That sounds like a great idea I've never been but I've heard that it gets better each year, has the '06 event been and gone?

trundles off to dig out his old rally jacket!

August 27th/28th this year!

Regardless of everyone else, I always go in vaguely 'period' clothing. Two years ago it was 'Sean Connery in Dr No'-style blue polo shirt and white trousers (wasn't really trying that year), last year it was Lotus-Ford Cosworth rally jacket (an RT Retro one in 'Essex Petroleum' colours) and flared jeans, and this year I'm seriously considering my grey pinstripe suit jacket, from 1969, apparently from Jermyn Street (though I'd best not as it'll probably just get wet/dirty).

Come along! Most of the NW PHers try and make it.

You are absolutely correct - in fact it goes even further to create a "blue riband" historic season:

At the top are the heritage events (linked to a specific period or event, with dressing up and all the trappings):
- Goodwood Revival Meeting
- Oulton Park Gold Cup
- A VSCC event for pre-war. Either at Shelsley, co-hosted by the MAC, or perhaps an event at a revitalised Brooklands with Mercedes... (before a pedant steps in, I recognise See Red at Donington, but I think there is a better opportunity)

Complementing these are more generic events with a more open brief, with a focus on owners clubs:
- Goodwood Festival
- Silverstone Classic
- Brands Hatch HSCC SuperPrix

Geographically diverse enough to cover most of the country, all eras, and the facility to support bikes as well as cars. A bit of co-operation between organisers could:
- Avoid conflict by spreading dates
- Complementary themes, both avoiding conflicts but also enticing some foreign owners with a "tour" of multiple events rather than shipping in the car for just one weekend
- Enough events so that almost every historic series can be hopeful of at least one blue riband race every year or so (which as we have seen with the GRM is effective in building numbers in the smaller historic series)

Entirely out of interest apart from being awarded said medals are there any conditions under which you are allowed to wear them?
I know that the surviving spouse can wear them, but after said spouse dies then I'm not sure what the protocol is for subsequent generations.

I know it's done at Goodwood and looks the part but out interest how many chaps went to motor racing togged up in their military wear? I've been searching Google images from grand prix for 1950-1955 and I don't see many. For that matter it's amazing to see that very few spectators appear to be wearing hats yet our perception is that everyone wore a flat cap or trilby.

The relevance of the military uniform is due to the WW2 base at Goodwood and the airfield just so happens to be at the site of the circuit (funny that )

I would say that it was probably about a 50/50 split as regards the who wore a hat and who didn't and obviously a lot of it was weather dependant.

To be fair though, as long as people have made an effort does it really matter?

Oops sorry... was I sounding anoracky ? Didn't mean to... Agree it's all a bit of fun, you should see the daft clobber I have worn over the years! I was just searching google/eBay to get something a bit different for this year - bored with the blazer, flannels, braces and trilby look Rich...

Went a couple of years ago.

I went in a USAF pilot's uniform and Dad went in a full german pilots dress uniform thing got a few funny looks and some of the 40's style police there carried him off!!!! Was all in gest of course.

Is a really good day and definately worth going to the effort of getting down the local Army & Navy supplies store to see what they have. My suit was about £50 AFAIK.

If I go in a DJ, shirt, bow tie and shorts will I look a pillock? I realise it's not a 'proper' costume and that black tie in the day is a bit a of a faux pas but it's either that or 'normal' clothes.

You will simply look like a refugee from a stag-night trying to take the piss out of the event. It's not a Le Mans style piss-up.

One additional thing on the military costume theme, if you don't have the right to wear any medal ribbons, don't wear them. Bad form otherwise.

Bit like Mugabe when he decided to wear a VC ribbon! Unfortunately for him, the secretary of the Victoria and George Cross Society saw it and gave hime a rollickking!

I believe that was actually His Excellency President for Life, Field Marshal Alhaji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Conqueror of the British Empire.

I got everything from eBay. A genuine period 3 piece suit, knitted tie and trilby, about £70 total. Combined with a white shirt and brogues it should look roughly right and no rummaging in charity shops involved.
