If I go in a DJ, shirt, bow tie and shorts will I look a pillock? I realise it's not a 'proper' costume and that black tie in the day is a bit a of a faux pas but it's either that or 'normal' clothes.
You will simply look like a refugee from a stag-night trying to take the piss out of the event. It's not a Le Mans style piss-up.

OK. Thanks.
sorry to have sounded a bit harsh

Funny how that is ruined by the font that Goodwood used for the signs otherwise who could tell the era...

I think that a very long overcoat, felt hat and something very subtle underneath looks the most 'motorsport' attire from that era.

Hi everyone,

I have a fancy dress and costume hire business in Essex. We provide 'real' and reproduction costumes for people going to events such as the Goodwood Revival.

As well as suits and dresses, we have lots of uniforms. They do have the medal ribbons on the left I'm afraid, because we also use them for production - but I'm sure it's the spirit that you wear them in that matters - ie: Don't pretend they are yours!

Have a look at our website: www.dressing-upbox.co.uk (We are only open on Satuday during August)

I'm afraid I drive a white transit van most of the time, although I do own a 'cherished vehicle' - a 1972 Ford D Series horsebox!!

Hi,

I've just posted a note to say that I have a company who provide costumes for events such as the Revival. However, I haven't been on this forum before, and I think my reply has started another thread ..... I don't quite know where it's gone, anyway!

Have a look at www.dressing-upbox.co.uk

Oooh thats naughty. That'll be like me saying my sister, Emma makes costumes and dresses in the 40s style and would happily take commissions. Very naughty....

always makes me chuckle when people wear military costumes, like any serving officer in the 50s would wear number twos to a race meeting!!??

My tickets arrived this morning for the Goodwood Revival.

My general knowledge of history and that era is terrible, so I'm coming here for advice. I'm in my 20s and going to the revival with my girlfriend.

What should I go as, and where do you get the costumes from?
If you're anywhere near Portsmouth and fancy doing military stuff - http://www.sabresales.co.uk/ - be careful of the owner (the chap with the beard) as he's a bit old school. Good kit though - they rent stuff out as well as selling it (if you're going for 3x or more, just buy one - that's the sort of thing).

For the missus, if you're anywhere near Camden, have a look at http://www.vivienofholloway.com/ - they've moved location since the last time I went but when I was there before they also did gents rocker shirts etc.

Up to you really - I've personally used both of these places (with the gf) and am happy with both of 'em.

An idea of the sort of thing Sabre Sales do:

Goodwood was an RAF base until 1946.

Because I've often though that, with a little bit of organisation, it could complement the Goodwood Revival rather well.
You are absolutely correct - in fact it goes even further to create a "blue riband" historic season:

At the top are the heritage events (linked to a specific period or event, with dressing up and all the trappings):
- Goodwood Revival Meeting
- Oulton Park Gold Cup
- A VSCC event for pre-war. Either at Shelsley, co-hosted by the MAC, or perhaps an event at a revitalised Brooklands with Mercedes... (before a pedant steps in, I recognise See Red at Donington, but I think there is a better opportunity)

Complementing these are more generic events with a more open brief, with a focus on owners clubs:
- Goodwood Festival
- Silverstone Classic
- Brands Hatch HSCC SuperPrix

Geographically diverse enough to cover most of the country, all eras, and the facility to support bikes as well as cars. A bit of co-operation between organisers could:
- Avoid conflict by spreading dates
- Complementary themes, both avoiding conflicts but also enticing some foreign owners with a "tour" of multiple events rather than shipping in the car for just one weekend
- Enough events so that almost every historic series can be hopeful of at least one blue riband race every year or so (which as we have seen with the GRM is effective in building numbers in the smaller historic series)
Thread necromancy I know, but I still think this would be a great idea.

Also, funnily enough, it seems there's another classic 'era' emerging, between around 1986 and 2000. Revival races might include Group A rally cars (Integrales, Escort Cosworths, Celica GT-Fours etc), Group A touring cars (Sierra Cosworths, BMW E30 M3s, Mercedes 190 Cosworths and the like), Group C Le Mans cars, TOCA Super 2000-era BTCC racers, F1 cars from the days of Mansell, Senna, Hill, Hakkinen, Schumacher and Prost.

I reckon Brands Hatch would be a good venue for this.

Not that it's a big issue because let's face it it's not a period film set and there are styles from 50s through to 60s mini skirts but apparently after the war with rationing people didn't have so many clothes and men did wear uniforms to events simply because they looked smart. The choice was (apparently) you could get a de-mob suit or keep your uniform but not both. I wasn't there in the 50s and my Dad was 8th army and couldn't wait to get rid of his desert army gear.

I think that would be good, I'd prefer it to be 1975-1990 though

Officers wouldn't you're right, but other ranks would if having a leave pass at the time. Certainley up until the end of National Service in 1960/61 ish, other ranks in the military both enlisted and national service, did not have access to civilian clothing for their duration of time in.

In our imaginary grand scheme, the Oulton Park Gold Cup covers this. Generally speaking (VSCC race and invitation XK races aside) it's late '60s-Group B era.

By far the best place to hire costumes for the Goodwood revival is Costume Hire by Vintage Years. They are based in Leicester and are well worth the visit. They can send and collect back if you cannot get there. Website is www.costumehire.co.uk
