I don't like the way Goodwood is going!
Discussion
Hi all,
just wondered if anyone has noticed this;
http://www.goodwood.co.uk/site/content/festivalofs...
Personally i don't like the way the F.O.S is going, it's becoming far to snobbish and upper class and less for the average enthusiast (the likes of most of us). I've been going for 16 years but this could well be the last year. Aviation show for people and companies looking to purchase aircraft, i mean, come on Goodwood!. What does everyone else think?, and if i'm in the wrong then feel free to give me a paper bag to put over my head .

I wouldn't be averse to an aircraft display, after all it is the Festival of SPEED.
I would guess that the statistics quoted i.e a third of those attending have a PPL, charter aircraft regularly, or have a general interest in aviation, refer to the participants as opposed to the general public.
I think Goodwood always has had a snobbish element to it but that's probably one of the things that makes it so unique. Although I don't necessarily agree with the way things are going it won't stop me enjoying the event.

I get where you're coming from with this, personally I still think it's the best show in the world, but I can also see how some of that could be and is being eroded. This aviation aspect to it though sounds a little different though. By its very nature it will be based down the road at the airfield so the business aspect of it is unlikely to affect the FOS site. As a plus there's obviously a much greater chance of more air displays throughout the weekend.
The Aviation part of FoS is not replacing anything that has previously been there.. It is an addition to the event. If you don't like planes - just walk past it!
Everyone surely understands that FoS is part of a business and businesses are set up (generally) to make money. If we don't continue to find new ways of generating revenue, how can we be expected to improve the event?.. There is one other way of course.. increase the price of tickets - but I guess you wouldn't like that either.

No, the tickets are expensive enough. I just think that the Festival is changing and not in a good way. Keep all that bullst somewhere that doesn't interfere with the cars and bikes we all want to see and i'll be happy . I know it will be as good as every other year.Everyone surely understands that FoS is part of a business and businesses are set up (generally) to make money. As a veteran of every day of every FoS bar 1993, I'm in a reasonable position to view its evolution. I really think it's become less snobby as time has gone on. In the early years, there was little corporate involvement and precious little mainstream media interest. These days the event is entirely accessible to every chump and his dog. However, this is no bad thing - it means a wider array of entries and a wider demographic.
The aviation show sounds like something which could easily become a stand-alone event at Westhampnett in years to come. Perhaps he's treating this as a toe-in-the-water exercise. There are still a huge number of wealthy locals who wouldn't dream of watching a clubbie at Mallory, yet attend the FoS annually. These guys are probably Lord March's target demographic. I look forward to more air displays in future - the Typhoon last year was incredible. Don't even get me started on the Vulcan at the Revival...

To be fair, yes the F.o.S started of as a motorsport only event and yes, the addition of major car manufacture stands and supercar runs up the hill may have brought in a larger more 'mainstream' crowd..But the event is still a Amazing day or three days out and still very much a top class event for motorsport and cars and just keeps getting better !..well if like planes too!
Hi Rich, he did tell us bits and it will be exciting - it always is! Didn't know about the planes, shows how much I read the latest news but if this is in addition to everything else then great. But where are they going to put them???? I've been watching the old festival dvd's and it does show how much the event has changed but if they keep on adding things we'll need more days to see it all, its a struggle to get round it all in three as it is! In answer to the question first posed I think that £100 or so for a weekend this entertaining has got to be great value eclipsed only by the revival. Not sure what this says about me but they are the best weekends in the year for me. Mark
Just as well I'm going to get a ticket for all 3 days this year as there is more and more to see.
I'd quite like to see some planes close up and if they could get the Vulcan to fly over for the FoS, then that would be great.
I think it's an amazing event to go to and is quite unique in what it does.

For everyone who wants to see the Vulcan flying at Goodwood (or anywhere else for that matter), see here http://www.vulcantothesky.org Donations or pledges are needed very urgently, or else it will never fly again
