... but isn't that the point... the circuit was only reopened in 1998. Some of the residents will have been there longer than that!
Don't get me wrong, I love Goodwood and I love motorsport (and the associated noise), and I live just close enough to hear some of the noisier cars. However, Goodwood is special because it is a sleepy little circuit with a character unlike any other circuit I've visited - its success could be its downfall. That said, more racing, local to me, can never be a bad thing

What about the airfield, has that been open all the way along?
I'm not sure when the airport was opened... but it's not exactly Heathrow... I suspect a race car at full chat all day is a lot more intrusive than the occassional Cessna!

I was speaking with one of the Marshalls a couple of weeks ago during one of the Goodwood test days, he explained that they wanted to be able to allow more cars onto the track (i.e. 1 or 2) IF the existing 5/10 cars where having no effect on the 'drive by sound test'
Obviously, I guess there is also more to it - i.e. a small increase in race days etc

As I understand it, between 1966 and 1998 there was still plenty of activity at the circuit anyway - tests and sprints, etc. It's not like it's been completely silent during that period. As I recall, they had to spend a lot of time and money creating the spectator banking around the circuit in such a way that it minimised noise travelling as much as possible. In my experience, the locals actually enjoy the FoS and Revival and it brings a massive boost to the area. Fingers crossed this doesn't go the way that Croft did...

I remember visiting goodwood to watch sprint meetings in the 80's/90's long before the noise issues were a problem (and there were some seriously loud and quick cars then) but never remember any complaints from local residents in surrounding area writing in to the local papers! It's only a few days in the year... go for a nice long walk if you don't like the sounds, or better move somewhere away from a place where you know there will be busy events if you don't like it. I personally would love to live there, see what people are taking to Goodwood and get some photos

I live on Hayling Island, only about 100 meters or so from the sea, at night in the winter sometimes the sounds of the waves crashing on the shore wake me and disturb my sleep - who should I complain to?munch997 said:

Problem is on some circuits (don't know about Goodwood) it isn't, it's 7 days a week. That's a big change from the odd race weekend a few years ago with the circuit sitting empty all week.Now I'm not defending the nimby's that move in, but if you've lived there for years and the noise is now every day when it was only once or twice a week, I can see how the issues start.

That's not a joke. They really did write to the War Ministry about the noise of the Spitfires and Mustangs.

Forgive me for writing this but; I work with very nice visiting cars and some very tolerant people who enjoy them, everyone does understand the noise regulations. Difficult as it has been the marshals and drivers at the circuit have achieved a high standard of recognition for administering and monitoring the appropriate limits on given days; which is done religously and copeous records are maintained.
Surely the outer public road that runs the Eastern side of the circuit from Woodcote to Rolls Royce roundabout can be blamed for most of the noise issues. The odd few Ducati's (in a Pack) on a ride out or Toyota Celica with big bore exhaust, must add and in my opinion give a certain amount of flavour to the countryside and after all they are on a public road and make noise.
I have heard them riding and driving up and down the road outside and still get the odd phone call from sources around and about the circuit claiming we have something on it that is making a noise and should be controlling it. Sometimes we have nothing travelling around and these calls still come in...........
An RAF Tornado at 1710 in the evening, mach 0.8 250 feet on flyby, awesome sight, much like the passing Chinook or Puma(s) that fly low over the Trundle and use the Valley beyond.
Strange enough one gent arrived at 0800 on a Sunday morning covered in hedge trimmings, nothing on the circuit to complain; I wonder what his neighbours thought of the racket he was creating at that time.
Lastly the local fireworks parties that are held in way of celebrating something can be heard for miles around, these are all issues but are often short duration and controlled.
I have had over a decade of experience in these matters and enjoy my job; please may it continue.
