As this is the first one (maybe the only one?) of a monthly competition let me confirm that for this month it is action photos from the actual hillclimb ie cars going up the hill. I won't worry about pics not on topic as I don't have to judge them but I am not worrying about them being there either. So to conclude I will pick a winner from all the entries for the subject mentioned on 1st September and let you know then the winner can then choose their own Goodwood subject such as the rally stage, Revival, breakfast club etc. They can then start a new topic entitled 'Goodwood photo competition September', simples! Carry on all, this could be fun
. Great idea I know people will say this isn't the right forum but I get baffled with science when I ask on the Pistonheads photo forum. I'm intending to buy a new camera, pocket sized (so not a DSLR) but am happy to spend what's necessary to get something decent. For moving subjects like this (basically I do holidays and cars) do you chaps all use DSLR or are the current compact digitals fast enough to capture these sort of images? I mean in terms of the delay between pressing the button and it actually taking the shot, my old digital takes ages and the car has moved on! Was looking at the Lumix GF1 - any good?

Hi RichB. there are a few good point and click cameras around like the lumix GF1 and you can take some good action pictures with them too! ..BUT its when using a DSLR thats makes taking Action shots a Lot easier!.. (but also a whole new world of options and settings and heavy gear to lug around events !!
the real difference between a Dslr and a 'point and click' for taking action or moving car pics, Are start up time..(delay to taking the pic), frames per second (certain DSLR can take from 3 to 10+ pictures per second !) what kind of lens you use on DSLR, 100mm to 400mm is the average, which focus very fast and bring a subject your taking a picture off so much closer! (so look for a camera with plenty of zoom, or digital zoom!) Also with Dslr and some 'pocket size or point and click cameras' you can set the camera up so the pictures are taken with a slow shutter speed (this gives you the blurred background and the blur or movement on the car wheels!)
So in short look for a Pocket size camera that does something as close to the above
Not a technical photo, but this sums up the magic of the FoS for me. This is the event waking up on Sunday. The fabulous drive over the Downs, fresh coffee and bacon, the smell of Castrol R, the sound of racing engines warming up, the most spectacular view in racing. Of the many hundreds of race meetings I've been to, I still get goosebumps at Goodwood. Magic.
