Sorry, perhaps this is a bit of a daft question:

Now that the weathers picked up (famous last words) I'm going to give the bike I use to commute on a proper OCD, erm, 'detailing'.

Have got the right sort of stuff for degreasing the drive train, lubing the chain and some grease for the bearings but was wondering what's best for the general stuff. I've been away/injured for the last month and there's a bit of surface rust on some bits - where the spokes meet the rims, on the chain rings etc.

Need a new tin of WD40 anyway but see most places carry GT85 as well I was wondering what you use.

Cheers

Don

GT85 is better for bikes as it contains Teflon - don't use it on the chain though. Ideal for the mechs and most other areas.

Cheers, the chain is in a right old state but have some proper degreaser and some dry lube for it.

Worth getting a new chain? An old stretched chain stuffs up the cassette and chainrings.

Take the chain off if you can and soak it in petrol overnight - excellent degreaser!

Will be replacing the whole chainset at some point soon (hopefully) so just want to get it clean for the next month or so.

GT85 will go on and "dry" leaving it's teflon coating behind. WD40 will go on and stay wet, and as such attract dust and dirt.

GT85 therefore is a better bet for most bits, other than those you have already mentioned.

Good plan - check the cassette too - these wear quicker than the chainset.

I get through an entire drivetrain in 1-2 years - cassette, chain, chainset and until yesterday, a BB too. Now got a Chris King BB which are meant to last forever - I will believe that in two years time but for now, it looks nice wink

GT85 is great stuff - I use it all over the place - cars, house, bikes, lawnmower, strimmer, etc, etc.
