Ridgeway Randonee for BHF – anyone doing it?
Discussion
Just wondering if anyone is planning on taking part in this years Ridgeway Randonee for the British Heart Foundation next weekend?
I am toying with the idea and wondered if anyone has ridden the event in the past, or is planning on taking part this year, if so can you offer an opinion or advice???

Sorry for late reply, been away for the weekend
Average is 1200ft climbing every 15 miles or so. A lot of the time you will be riding along the tops of the chain of hills (hence where the Ridgeway trail got it's name from) but you do drop into valleys and go back up every now and again. Some of the hills are quite steep but this is southern UK, not Wales/Scotland so they are hills and not mountains. Don't think there are any over ~700ft high and you would never start from sea level anyway
A lot of the ridgeway is open to motor vehicles so you can expect ruts, but on the whole it's nice wide bridleways consisting of hardpack dirt, gravel and grass. Hardtail MTB copes with everything here.
The wiltshire end is quite chalky ground but it gets flinty the further east you go so be prepared for punctures. Some on-road sections linking the sections but these are mostly short
The ridgeway itself is very well signposted, you would be doing well to miss the signs. The whole thing is doable in a day, I average 11-12 miles per hour along the sections I've done, that's including stops.
The views are spectacular on a clear day
Have fun
