I don't know what's going on but I feel like I have kind of lost my mojo on the bike at the minute.

This has been my second biggest month on the bike at 42 hours of training, and that included a very lazy week last week and no riding this weekend. I kind of felt tired, bored and lethargic and not much like going out. I had a couple of bugs which I put this down to but the feeling has remained for a week now.

I don't feel as excited as I did about the weekend rides any more either which is weird. The missus is due in a couple of weeks and we have so much going on so maybe it's all to do with that.

No leave for me, but did a brutally hard 150k group ride on saturday, yet still dragged my sore a**e and aching legs for a gentle 80k sunday, just to tip it over the 1000k smile
And I was happy to complete the 250k challenge on my mountain bike hehe

Can't be arsed to find the qoute, but who ever was moaning about the challenges was totally wrong, it got me out on the bike so much more than normal smile

When it eventually arrives I predict you'll discover a renewed interest in getting out of the house for a few hours as often as possible!

If it's any consolation, I think it's just something we go through. I only really got back on the bike this month after falling out of love with the bike in November and having a 3 month slump where I couldn't bring myself to look at the thing. Getting dragged out for a cake ride with friends on a sunny day kickstarted me again.

Its possibly because you have no purpose to your riding. The way you describe your riding is the way someone who is an avid racer etc would look at it, i.e. I don't want to do this riding, but I know I need to or I'll be st in the races next season. That is how I look at it, over the last 8-9 days I've done 20 hours of riding and can say I enjoyed about 2 hours of it, but I know I need to get out and train as the desire to win events outweighs the dullness of going out for 4 hours on my own.

You're having the same mindset as I am but with seemingly (correct me if not) nothing the other side to get gratification from (race results, target time in the Etape, etc etc) so I can well understand it. I've always thought the way you spoke about how you were going to step it up and what not was more to publicly put it out there so you followed through with it, I personally would struggle do go and ride 50 hours over a month if I knew it wasn't going to be 'for' anything.

Obviously you may not agree, and it may be normal life getting in the way etc, but that is just what I've observed.

As okgo says if you're not preparing for anything, as in racing or whatever, then you shouldn't be 'training', but riding purely for the pleasure of being on a bike.

If you're not enjoying it then maybe slow things down a bit and only go out when you feel like it. If the weather's crap or you're feeling tired then don't bother.

Everyone loses a bit of interest from time to time, so either have a break for a week or so or go out on your MTB a few times for a change. It's just messing about on bikes, don't sweat it!

Totally agree, but I would add another dimension that can also spoil the enjoyment; If you have other tasks/responsibilities that you feel you should be taking care of but you are out on the bike you could find yourself musing over what you should be doing vs what you would like to be doing.

If you have a young-un on the way who is due to put in an appearance imminently then I would imagine there is a lot to take care of at home in preparation for the arrival, as well as supporting the missus as I would imagine she is a bit tired and irritable at the moment (based on my past experiences of my missus being preggers). I would imagine you want to keep on pedaling so as not to lose the fitness you have built up, but don't want to neglect your duties at home.

I am a contractor and have taken the past couple of months off following the end of my last contract. I now need to secure a new contract which means spending time taking to agencies, rattling my network, surfing job sites etc - all of which is soul destroying stuff and I would much rather be riding. However, when I am riding I feel like I should be looking for work.........ever decreasing circles......!

My remedy, mornings are for work hunting and admin, afternoons are for riding - and I am taking one day every other week to just get a long ride in.

As for training, I have signed up to a bunch of sportives, lead rides for my local group (including a few beginner rides) and am planning on racing later this year - good motivators to keep up the saddle time but without the pressure of needing to be on the bike and training hard against a plan with no flexibility......

Stick with it fella, it will pass........if you hang up the lycra and promise yourself you will 'go back to it' later this year you might regret it.

Oh and if you are worried about Strava related stuff then close your account, it can go from motivational to soul destroying if you take it too seriously!

All three replies are accurate and make sense particularly okgos. Madad is right however luckily all is done at home for new arrival. I have enjoyed this weeks rides a lot so I think it was just a rest week required mentally more than physically. I'm just under 2000 miles hard riding now since Jan and all for no real end goal so think I will calm it down and focus more on enjoyment. I'm just getting to the point now where I see the flaws and obvious mislead of the strava leaderboards, I find I much prefer a clean group ride with some friendly competition.

Training for what? If the answer's "nothing", then forget it. Life's too short.

For the first time ever, I now know what it feels like to lose a KOM...

Strava said:
"Uh oh! You just lost your KOM on 'Clockwise lap of Hawley Lake' to James Oatley by 57s. - 7 days ago"
Ah, well. One down, five to go....

....I knew it was too good to last. Still. I set that particular KOM in December, and it took until spring and the fairer weather for someone to smash it wink

ETA: It's a shame I'm not currently fit to ride, else I'd go out and see if the nicer weather lets me get around that segment any quicker.

They seem to be like buses. Go for ages without any, and then BAM 2 come along at once. Yesterday was a great day to be me! WOO!
