Just signed up to Strava and done my first ride (not just with Strava, I mean my first bike ride in over 15 years). It's a fantastic app...

Meh. You have made a start, and got onto a bike and ridden it. Many well intentioned folk don't ever get that far. That is the hardest part done. All you have to do now is to keep riding. Use Strava to inspire you, set some (achievable) goals, and accomplish them, before pushing on a little more. And remember the quote attributed to the Chinese philosopher Laozi... ...Got a way to go yet

Why its annoying is because the pro's are in a bunch. The speed a bunch can do vs a single rider is a HUGELY different thing.
Yep you feckers ruined all the segments within the Drift Road loop http://www.strava.com/segments/687464
Normally that output would give you 32km/hr or thereabouts (depending on how wide you are!)

Sorry for the newbie/dumb question, but if my iOS Strava app has missed off a section of ride, how do I edit it to make it more accurate please?
I have used this in the past: http://strava-tools.raceshape.com/snap/Not exactly O/T for this forum, but I was wondering how Strava copes with recording ski slopes? When we're out cycling, pretty much everyone will, by definition, follow pretty much exactly the same route through a segment. Obviously people will take different routes through roots, mud, or whatever, but from a GPS tracking perspective, it's effectively going to be the same.
On a ski slope, on the other hand, two people could theoretically ski exactly the same piste without coming within 200 yards of each other, or with one dropping straight down the slope and another snow-plowing the whole way across the entire width of the piste. How does Strava figure out that these individuals are all running the same segment?

I'm just guessing, but I'd have thought if they do use segments for ski activity then it'd be a case of geo-fencing the start and end points of a segment and score any skiers who pass from one to the other. Then it's up to you to choose the fastest point between the two.
That's got trouble written all over it.

Can't see it working really, doesn't it only allow upto 10% of a route to be off the line and off the line can be very little difference - not Sure how much but I have ridden the same track on the MTB but chosen a different line that's only taken me maybe 6m off the main line for maybe 20m for it to not recognise the segment. I guess GPS accuracy also plays its part, is there any degree of 'snapping to' known routes, like planning software does to roads? I know my garmins accurate enough that it'll record if I do a loop within a single track lane when waiting for someone to catch up.
Ever wondered what the weather was like when somebody got that KOM? Just how strong was that tailwind? Well wonder no more!

Funnily enough, all of mine are wind assisted

Interesting - but not sure on accuracy. I've only got 3x KOMs and one of them, I know for a fact, had a tailwind so strong that the return leg resembled a wind tunnel. I specifically went out on that day to ps off my mate Karl by setting unbeatable times on his route to work! But the tool reckons it was only 7km/h...http://spinloose.co.uk/segment_weather.php

So, another noob question I'm afraid. Well, two actually. Why, if I've done a ride new to myself, does it not give me PB's across the board? (Randomly it has selected one piece of road I have never been on before....).
Secondly, if i'm obviously following off-road tracks that I have been on before, but the GPS says that I'm 10 m off the original track, does it not snap back? It's quite infuriating in that regard when I have done good times, but it's refusing to recognize what's happening. I've tried the snap back tool, but no joy...
Cheers!

There would be no point to that so the developers have removed the noise and you only get PB information when it has some value to it.Gassing Station | Pedal Powered | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
