The bike one went viral a month or so ago, after tweeting it to Dan Lloyd my twitter account ended up trending thanks to him quoting by name in it!

Strava art, anyone...?

Some will have been seen before, but maybe not here on PH.

Anyone attempted, or been tempted to have a go at a Strava 'picture'? Or can you link to any art you've seen on your 'dashboard' feed?

I remember the elephant! Although in my memory it had longer legs... wink

As far as viral stuff goes, I'm not on 'social media' so a lot of that stuff passes me by. Pistonheads/Strava/BBC Sport/BBC Weather are about the limit of my regular 'digital' exposure, I'm afraid.

I thought the pony/horse was very apt, with it being The New Forest. Certainly a far better, and much more original attempt than "yet another Strava trace that resembles genitalia" (and yes, I'm guilty of attempting one of those too... http://www.strava.com/activities/89821033 )

Kudos/followers on Strava...

Looking at a recent ride, 8 people have given me Kudos on it. Three are PHers, one has no clubs listed on his profile, but is from London.

The other four are a varied international bunch...

One from Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil.
One from Köln (Cologne), Germany.
One from Ad Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
One from Hong Kong. He served in the same Corps as me in the army and found me through our 'old boys' cycling club, but I don't actually know him.

It got me to wondering. What is the most obscure/most distant location you...
a) have a follower in/from?
b) have had 'kudos' or a comment from?

All these far flung Strava types have been quite recent. I'm not sure how they found me exactly, but I suspect it's through clubs, etc. Although I don't usually appear high on any leaderboards, so not sure why I've been 'selected', as it were. It's nice, in a way, because it makes me feel like part of a truly international 'cycling culture', but in a small way it underlines just how invasive the internet can be.
Someone from Malaysia followed me this week. He also follows almost everyone I know, it seems. Instant block.

Anyone following me who I don't know gets blocked in fact. More annoying is the bloke who I do know, so have no excuse to block, but who gives me kudos on every single ride, even a 2 mile 14mph trundle back from Waitrose. Often he will do it within minutes of me posting my ride. It gets a bit creepy!

I've not blocked anyone yet. I haven't needed to. I'm following 33, and have 35 followers, so not ridiculous numbers. I ought to clean up who I'm following, because a fair number of them are very infrequent riders, or seem to no longer use Strava, but I fear I'd offend someone, so I leave things as they are.

I've given a few 'random' people Kudos, but usually it'll be because they ride with someone I'm following, so I find them that way, or they've taken part in a race, etc. Hopefully I don't 'weird' anyone out with my 'out of nowhere' Kudos and comments. The other way I find people is using the Strava Labs Flyby site, and I've used that to comment on people's rides when we've passed one another out on the road/trail. I do tend to reserve Kudos for longer rides and ones with significant achievements, though. Turbo trainer rides, and regular commutes don't attract attention unless they stand out particularly. I just found it a bit odd recently, with a significant number of far-flung characters all commenting or following me. There've been South Africans and Australians recently too, along with a couple from the USA. It's all good fun though, as I'm fairly anonymous on Strava, and I don't have Facebook or any of the other social media stuff to 'cross pollinate' with.

I just came on to see if anyone else was getting odd Kudos, and the obvious answer is yes!

The last couple of rides I've uploaded have been given Kudos within minutes by someone called Michael Bailey in Gloucester. I've no idea who he is, but he's following 4,148 people, has is being followed by 1,488.

Presumably because people feel the need to return the favour when he gives them kudos, he has been given kudos 24,733 times!!!

Gloucester you say?

Phew, faster than him. (This is completely different to giving people random kudos and totally not weird).

I've noticed the odd Kudos coming from California. I dont know why California or how these people are seeing my rides but I do find these obscure Kudos awards strange. I can only assume that I am quite a big deal over there now.

To perhaps reduce some of this kudos-giving mystery, on the challenges section I often check out the leaderboards (particularly gran fondo and MTS series) for a bit of inspiration. A couple of guys had done north of England to the outskirts of London last month and another guy had done a 450km ride on the east coast of Australia. I live nowhere near these places and don't know the people, but I could see giving kudos in examples like this quite reasonable (I didn't by the way).

I can't quite figure out if that ride is utterly bonkers or just utterly pointless.
I'm thinking more along the lines of the latter.

Seem to come from club membership for me.

I think it was a ride to complete the Strava 8000m climbing challenge, if I had the time I think 4-5 nice long rides would be the more sane way of targeting that sort of elevation!

There is obviously the new craze for Everest'ing a hill, rules here. http://www.everesting.cc/the-rules/

List of crazy people!

I am a member of three groups, a local one, Pistonheads and Road.cc. I'm thinking my California Kudos givers a probably members of Road.cc also then.

I picked up a new one tonight...

Vladimir Rudometkin, from Tver Oblast (some way North of Moscow), Russia. It would seem that he found me via the "GT Bike Owners" club. It's a relatively small club, and one of the few that I've managed to feature on weekly leaderboards of late.

Yup. Just change your profile settings from metric to imperial >to metric<. But you'll also have to climb in metres, and travel in kilometres.

Hover the mouse over your profile picture, select "settings", then "display preferences". Alongside "units and measurements" click on "miles and pounds" and you'll get a selection option. Change it to "kilometers and kilograms". Remember to use the "Save" box to the right, or else it won't apply the changes. Same process to switch it back too, so it's not a permanent change. Try it, see how you get on, swap back if it doesn't suit you.

All the data units are linked, you cannot change some to display metric (European) and others to display imperial (US) units, unfortunately. So if you choose "Miles and pounds" the Fahrenheit scale is the default temperature option.

Edit to put things the right way around. Doh!
