Why specifically a watch - do you run as well? If not, I'd have thought a Garmin 510, for example, which is specific to a bike (and can go on your stem or just out in front, rather than having to turn your wrist; especially annoying if it's cold and you have long sleeves and gloves on
I run as well. I have a bar mount for my existing HRM though.
Ps. Watch over the sleeves if it is cold

Tell us more!

I can't see anything on my "dashboard" about it. Whereabouts is the photo feature? Presuming it's on the ride upload/edit page? I've never put any photos on Strava, as I don't have an Instagram account. It'd be nice to be able to bung a few snaps up with the ride data when (if) I take anything worth posting.

If you go into the edit menu when accessing Strava on your phone there's an option in there to add photo's to a ride.
Not sure about the website though.

Cheers for the info. From what you say, and from the email I found from Strava, it looks/sounds as though it's a feature designed for use with mobile 'phones then. I shall have a glance at the edit menu next time I log in, but I'm guessing I'll still have to do without pictures for now (I still have a Nokia C1 wink ).

So currently taking my iPhone and garmin 810 out - iPhone to run strava and garmin as gps and speedo.

I know you can somehow link the garmin to strava but is it that reliable, and will it add in all the stages etc?

Problem is my phone battery is getting worse and worse and after my last ride (4hrs) it died just as I got in and plugged it in!

Are you actually serious?

http://www.strava.com/how-it-works - if you are then read that. Yes the garmin is a FAR superior device for everything to do with GPS recording of a ride. So record the ride, plug the garmin in and follow the instructions, you don't need to use your iPhone at all.

Yes, I was sorry. I am worse than useless with technology.

The man in the shop said I could when I bought it, and I have looked at the various websites but was just wondering how reliable it was.

I got a Garmin and stopped using my phone. It's far superior with none of the GPS drift that I used to get.

I don't have a 'smart' phone that'll run the Strava app, but I sometimes ride (MTB) with my son, who uses the Android app on a Samsung 'phone. Having been able to compare the two over exactly the same terrain, in exactly the same conditions, I'd always recommend the Garmin device over a 'phone. His device missed out on a number of segments that we both rode through, due to significant 'drift' inaccuracies, and at a number of points on one of his recent (solo) rides, he was complaining of missing more segments, whereby the app had his ride trace going over the middle of a lake that he was riding around. Now my Edge500 has had the odd brain-fart and missed bits out (which it infills with straight lines) but not nearly as often as the mobile app. No device is 100% accurate all of the time, but Garmins seem to be many times more accurate than mobile 'phones.

Download Garmin Express onto your PC. Sign up for an account on Garmin Connect and link it to your Garmin Express (the app should tell you how to do this)

Then, follow the instructions here http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/08/automatic-mapmy...

This should mean that when you plug your Garmin into the PC, any new rides are automatically uploaded to Garmin Connect (which nobody cares about) and thence to Strava (which they do!)

ETA - as far as I know there is no way of using a Garmin for speed *without* recording the ride. So the first time you do this you'll probably get a bunch of duplicate activities with those you recorded on your phone...

Lovely ride home tonight, sunny warm and a very light tail wind.

Got back and dropped the winter/wet weather hybrid into the bike repair man for a long overdue service and brakes and picked up the road bike he'd just serviced for me.

Felt very odd riding clipped in on the drops after a winter on a heavy flat bar and pedal hybrid, actually no quicker on way back but sure i'lI'll get used to it again.

I'm looking at getting a garmin - mainly so that I can plot routes and use as a type of satnav when riding. Will also use it abroad for the same reason. I'm thinking the 800 looks the best? Rather than the 500 series? But not read much on them yet. How do they function with strava? Would it be possible for example - to see when I was entering / completing segments or not?

Real time segments are available on Premium, but only through their phone apps.
