When we moved to our current house, it was no problem driving out to hilly places to run, ride or walk.

Now having a young family, there are fewer opportunities to get to the hilly places, so with hindsight moving to a nice (and relatively close to the in-laws), but pancake-flat, suburban area wasn't the best idea from a nipping out for an off-road ride/run point of view!

I'm lucky in that I live just on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. I can leave the house and over the course of a 2 hour ride easily do 2000+ ft of climbs.

I'm about an hours ride away from this climb

I live in North Cheshire and have to ride at least 15 miles to get to a hill of note. I know I could put the bike in the car and head further into the Peak District but I like the simplicity of road riding in that you get on your bike and ride.

This means that I have to do a good 2hrs to get some decent climbing in so my Saturday ride tends to start at 6:00am! And I'm still crap biggrin

The reall sad thing is that although Steve considers himself crap, i've followed him on Strava and he 's really just far too rapid.
I'm 12 miles further towards the hills, and can honestly say that i very, very rarely think "ooh, lets head towards the flat bit" - makes me feel lucky to be nearer the pain - i can do hill repeats on the wizard just 3 miles away...

Thanks Mr. Gump! It's because I've started doing TTs and finding that my level is propping up the leader board!

I'm Swiss Hilling and Cat and Fiddling this Saturday hopefully!

I know this smile PB is 26 odd i believe - mine is 28.01.

The daft thing is the closest i've coming to meeting him is when the confused lady in the cat and fiddle petrol station thought i'd come back again to buy water - must have missed him by 5 mins apnd both in PH uniform smile

Steve, if you're free on a wednesday, get yourself over to the macc wheelers club 10. I reckon you'd do really well, it's net downhill smile if the boy ever behaves again, i might get a second run out to keep you honest smile

I'm lucky living where I do. I did a 2 hr ride last night and did three decent climbs, although my legs are feeling it this morning!

Looking at the Wiggins-inspired My Hour challenge and rather than just log any old 1+hr ride this week, anyone else thinking of trying to see what sort of hour distance they can get?

I'm trying to plan out as flat a course as I can to see what a fat old duffer on the open road using a wholly unsuitable bike (XC MTB with ridiculously knobbly tyres) can manage as a personal 'hour record'. Bit difficult in the Chilterns but I'll do my best. That I've have two weekends away visiting friends and family (hic!) and have barely even been in the saddle for nearly three weeks probably doesn't help!

My maximum average speed over anything in the hour range would be about 25kph but that usually includes a fair degree of hilly bits so I'm hoping for a bit more than that, surely half of Wiggins' target of 55km is in reach? Without any sort of data or experience to back it up I'm wondering if I could crack 30km? I'd be happy with that.

I know that to all you sleek roadie carbon jockeys these speeds will sound a little lame, but you can only work with what you've got, right?

Anyone else?

How long do you have to do it?

I might tack 5 miles onto one of my TTs in the next week or two, I'll probably manage around 30 miles in that case.

I hadn't thought of doing this but I might now have a go on Wednesday. I'd have thought if you average 25km/h up and down the Chilterns when you aren't all-out for 60 minutes then you could crack 30 on a flat route when you are. Maybe do several laps of a shorter flat loop if that's easier to find than a 30km long flat route?

Rapha #MYHOUR Challenge
runs from June 1, 2015 — June 7, 2015

(ride data to be uploaded before June 10, 2015)

Strava challenge page said:
This Challenge won’t have a leaderboard of top speeds and distances… we want everyone coming home safe. The Rapha #MYHOUR Challenge is about bringing together different kinds of cyclists from around the globe, all celebrating our sport and demonstrating to Wiggins that he has the whole world behind him.

Go for a one-hour spin this week as a chapeau to Wiggins and be sure to tune in on Sunday. All finishers will receive a unique Rapha-designed Team Wiggins digital badge to commemorate their ride.
It's no massive challenge for most Strava users, I suspect. It requires only the ability to ride a bicycle for a one hour stretch. With a warm and fuzzy 'all inclusive', 'non-competitive' vibe and a digital badge for everyone who completes. As a method of demonstrating support for Sir Brad's hour record attempt, it's a pretty decent idea. From a practical point of view, I couldn't really give a stuff if one rider can ride ever so slightly further in an hour than another, especially within the sterile confines of a velodrome and the UCI rule book. It doesn't affect me, nor assist me in any way. BUT!

Go Wiggo! Go Wiggo! Go Wiggo!

(Interesting wording from Strava, given that they've faced litigation in the past from families of folk who died trying to 'win back' KOMs. Seems to suggest that, whilst they want everyone to finish this challenge safely, they couldn't give a stuff about participants in all the other challenges? Not true, I know, but I suspect that the wording of this challenge has not been proof-read by a lawyer, else they'd have edited out the obvious (to me at least) inference that could be pounced upon by the pursuant's legal team in future litigation...)

The leader board for the hour challenge has nothing to do with how quickly you complete the hour, it is only based on distance, so it is basically a re badged "MTS" challenge. The top of the leader boards are people who so far today have ridden for 9 + hours, and so on and so forth.

Oh right.

Sod that, nothing impressive about riding a lot if you don't have anything else to do.

I'll be giving this a go, my normal goal is to do my usualy off road loop in less than an hour, so I'll have to add a bit on to be sure.

That's very odd. There seems to be no correspondence between the leaderboard design and the wording of the challenge. Methinks some lawyers have got involved...

I agree.

I'm currently doing the Global corporate challenge and one of the other teams on our site is unbeatable after only a few days in. Doing a 100 mile ride on work days isn't unusual. That's great if you have no life but some of us have other things to do...biggrin
