^garmin had never lost a ride for me. The phone did several times,
The phone used to sometimes add 2 miles and go knows how much altitude at a cafe stop. Garmin doesn't.
Garmin's hrm and cadence were really useful when I was doing time trials.
Garmin meant I could go o new places and not worry about maps / getting lost.

There's loads of reasons to get one, don't regret your purchase just because it doesn't suit xj. If it suits you, it's still good smile likewise, if the iPhone app works for xj, that's all good too smile

I've got a Garmin Dakota for actual nav and it works well if a little clunkily. Just can't be doing with setting it up for rides where I know where I'm going, then having to upload via pc etc etc yawn!

Anyway, I've found a way round it. Don't stop hehe Except for cake or beer of course.

Looking at double posting bloke further up, I think he's actually running two Strava accounts with the same athlete name rather than uploading duplicate rides to one account. Strava won't let you upload two activities with the same time stamp, for one thing, and they show up as group activities for another.

I see what you mean about joining every club going though!

This

Plus battery life - less of an issue with phone tech in 2016 smile
And second the ability to navigate, I dont often need to but even my old 500 would follow a breadcrumb trail

Currently running an 810 and very happy with it

I've been using the free version of Strava on my Android phone for a couple of years, but was tempted to upgrade to Premium to get notification of segments to motivate my training.

However a mate has just offered me a Garmin 500 for £50. I've already got a Garmin ANT HRM and a GSC10 (although I think the wheel sensor is bust).

Which one do I go for, Strava Premium for the Android or the Garmin?

Depends

Live segments on my 810 were pretty cool and lead to me improving across the board - but can you safely mount a smartphone on your bars? I dont think I would fancy it, especially in the rain

My old 500 with a HRM was one of the keys to me getting much, much fitter. And faster

Cheers

I had a play, and it's entirely possible to do the App on my phone, and then upload from the Garmin that evening. I deleted the second one, but I could have left them there for double mileage.

Strava will not let me load the same file from my Garmin twice though.

I'm a little bit slower up the Madone than him! Although he's not twice as fast as me which I consider a small victory!

+1

Even though I have my issues with Garmin, Premium doesn't really offer much unless you're serious (training with power etc.).

What's the etiquette on reporting a suspiciously fast time?

Bloke in my village (I don't know him personally - it's on his profile) who is usually a fair bit slower than me has suddenly taken 30 seconds off a 5 minute local segment. In the spirit of full disclosure, he has pushed me lower down the top ten of a well-contested segment...

Review the rest of the ride, how many other trophies did he collect on that ride? is there any chance it was in a car and he had the garmin on by mistake? does he pull away from lights or junctions suspiciously quickly? DOes he have HR or cadence data?

There is a guy local to me who consistently rides circa 17-18 mph ave on 20-30 mile rides, yet gets 4 or 5 KoM's every time he goes out, he's bagged well over 100. Oddly enough his H/R and speed seem to increase exponentially from the exact start of a segment to the exact end of a segment, strange what a digital sticker will do for some people!!

Whatever gets you through the night I guess!

Whatever motivates people is good IMO. If that chap enjoys chasing KOM's, then fair play - if they enjoy im, why not?

Riding around steady then giving it some stick on certain sections? Seems perfectly normal to me!

I've lost a few recently, for the first time in ages, some of them were actually legit - usually its people who've left the garmin on when driving their bike away!

Depends on your baseline doesn't it - you should have made the KOM's harder to attain!
