I must add, that wasn't meant as a downer. The only time I've felt like I was really benefiting from my nice bike with aero wheels was in a road race where the pace was 25 mph for two hours.

Even on fast club runs I find my current training bike (similar level to the one you mention) is more than enough, both comfort wise and stiffness etc.

Also worth mentioning that the difference between 105 and ultegra shifting is pretty much tiny.
Maybe we are different, but jumping from my crappy Scott Speedster onto my Scott Addict is like night and day - no matter how quick I am going - 12mph in flip flops to the beach and I would still feel happier on the Addict. I know there is a huge rift in price and spec between the two bikes, but even still, I know which one I would rather be sat on smile

WTF is wrong with this forum, you ALWAYS need a better bike - forget what you are doing with it, full carbon, costing enough to get a severe bking off the missus with plenty of eeeeetalian parts fitted is the only answer :P

No one has mentioned it yet, but Shimano don't make any nice looking groupsets and all Campag stuff looks amazing.
And lets be honest, we all like our bikes to look nice.

Horses for courses really - I tried a bike with Red and the hoods were about as comfortable as getting dragged under a bus. Shimano is comfortable and pretty clinical. Campag is by far the best looking, and the thumb shifter isn't as inconvenient as it looks, even if it isn't as razor sharp on the shifts as Sram or Shimano.

They all basically do the same job at the end of the day (ok, bit of a generalisation, but the difference between red, DA and Record is pretty much down to personal preference). Personally, I would be sticking with Shimano until I got the the top level groupsets and then picking from one of the big 3, just because that is all I know - I have a cobbled together mix of Sora/105/Ultegra on the winter bike and Record Carbon on the good bike - the only differences that are actually noticeable on the road? The hoods feel a bit different and the Shimano stuff gives a more satisfying "bang" when shifting under load and that is about it smile

SRAM looks loads better than Shimano, but not as good as Campag. The last bit is my opinion, the first bit is fact.

Frankly, derailleurs are the ball-bags of bike technology. They hang there, unaerodynamic, sticking out and vulnerable to painful damage. You can make them shiny if you like but they're still ugly.

But - extreme measures aside - no-one would be without one.

How much does a Rohloff (sp?) weigh?
