like JQ I keep all my clobber at work but bring shirt/pants etc into work daily. Must admit that I prefer to commute when wearing a ruc sack - the last time I came off it cushioned the effect of my fall. Shame really, because I would have prefered to land on the pedestrian I swerved to avoid after they stepped out into the road without looking.

As of this morning there's a pair of jeans, half a dozen polo shirts, grundies and socks, a clean towel and full bottle of showergel under my desk. Tube? What tube?

Well, it would appear I really shouldn't have been riding a bike today - exactly the same thing happened to me on the way home. This time it was a black cab that tried to wipe me out doing a left hook. He was a bit further in front and the speeds were lower than this morning so it wasn't life and death, but after this morning I was fuming that it had happened again so he got both barrels, which he took with good grace, as I suspect he'd not been malicious in his actions and did abort the turn, although that did mean I collided with his cab. 18 months of nothing significant and then twice in a day.
I think I might drive to work tomorrow.

Well, that's another full weeks cycle commute [admittedly I've got to get home yet, but seeing as I dont have the car and I only have the 1 way of getting home, its a safe bet I'll pedal it ] 5 days; 9 rides; averaging 6.25 miles each way @ 16.8mph average on a hardtail MTB on knobblies.

Hi, Sorry I'm a stranger round here. But I just wanted to say I love the Olympics. Why? Coz the roads are so quiet...and...today I got good luck with Tailwin (Edwin's nicer brother), green lights and godspeed. Result was I shaved 2 1/2 mins off my PB to work - now down to 47m54s. I'm happy with that, I've only really been cycling to work since January, and even then its only 2 or 3 days a week. Took me a month to get under an hour... As you were DX

After the 2 near misses yesterday I morphed back into Mr Angry Cyclist this morning, I thought he'd disappeared a long time ago. On the ride home I shall be thinking of butterflies and white flffy clouds.

Is there anywhere I can 'save' a route and input my daily commute times each day to see my speed averages, time averages and best time etc...
I realise I could do this on Excel but there must be a dedicated cycling 'thing' out there?

Don't have an iPhone and the GPS things for bikes are a little expensive for me at the minute. I thought there would be an online site...
Anyway, I've got my ride of 24mile down to 1h 21m and 32s on a MTB with semi-slicks. Currently looking for a road bike.

I ride to and from work every day, it's only an eight mile round trip. Got aggressively overtaken by a knob in a white van a few weeks back, then he cut in to the left and slammed on his brakes due to oncoming traffic. I overtook him, gave him a look only for him to come flying past leaving minimal room giving me attitude through the window. I (genuinely) wrote a strongly-worded email to the company's head office and as many other relevant addresses as I could find (they're part of VW group). Got an apologetic email back from someone, and the promise of a follow-up call, but I was off on holiday the day after and haven't heard anything since. Hopefully the knob in question got a b king from his boss but I'll never know for sure. Just don't understand the mentality - was he trying to assert his authority over me on my bike in his two tonne van??

One of the side effects is the psychology of being timed. Certainly in Strava, the ride is divided into segments by the app, so I try to beat my time every day - within reasonable limits. I don't want to mow down a granny walking the dog, but fortunately for me in the mornings, my route is pretty deserted so I can push on against the time. Gets the old heart pumping which I suppose is the whole point.

Morning guys,
Thought I would stick a post in here rather than creating my own thread! I'm strongly considering beginning cycling to work, but I'm a tad wary of getting on the roads. Although I would say I'm pretty confident on a bike it's only ever been casual cycling when younger (age 23 now), and I've never really cycled on the roads around traffic.
Has anyone got any tips on this, are there any courses you can do etc?
Cheers!

Has anyone got any tips on this, are there any courses you can do etc? Confidence will certainly come from experience, and knowing where you should be on the road. Why not try your intended commute a few times at the weekend, maybe nice and early in the morning. Once you know the route, and what lane you need to be in, etc, you can concentrate more on what's going on around you. Funnily enough, the busier the town centre roads, the easier it can be, as the traffic around you is travelling slower. Have a good google and find out where the cycle routes are too. Get the right gear to be seen too. Proper lights and bright clothing will help.
