Down to 41 & 1/2 minutes for this mornings commute, lack of harsh headwind certainly helped I will break the 40 minute barrier going to work. I managed just under 40 minutes going home last week, though the work to home commute is easier than the home to work commute. Looking at the way the trees are bending the ride home is going to be into a vicious headwind most of the way.

Someone sat on my wheel for 10 minutes this morning. That hasn't happened for a long time!

I think I've worked out when cars/pedestrians are idiots - it's when I'm in a rush. I guess they just don't expect a bike to be doing 20mph+, so they think they can pull out in front of me or overtake then turn immediately left in front of me because I'm on a bike so must be going slowly.
Unfortunately I had to get a slightly earlier train than I was planning for, so needed to ride 2 miles in about 6 minutes!

Oh, and pedestrians who walk in the clearly bright fking green cycle lane, then swear at me when I ring my bell for them to move. Amazing.

I usually take the train for 25 of my 35 mile each way commute and cycle the other 10 from the Center of Glasgow to near the airport.

Sometimes I cycle the whole 35 miles home, but only if I am not working late and it is not going to be a headwind the whole way.

Anyway, last night I was working lateish, so took the train. Unfortunately my train broke down 5 miles or so out of Glasgow, so I had a choice. I chose to ride the rest of the way home. The rest of the passengers were stuck on the platform. Really enjoyed the extra 20 miles, though it was getting a bit chilly by the time I got home.

Now on to Scotrail's customer services to get the price of my ticket back smile

I gave up using a bell as I tended to get bad reactions from it. I find a cheery "excuse me!" works much better. I think people find the bell presumptive in a "Out of my way!" sort of way.

See, I gave up with the "excuse me"s as people either ignored me, or swore at me.

Since I got a super-loud bell, no-one can ignore it, I just get the odd person shouting at me.

Best one ever was on a steep uphill section, I shouted "excuse me" very loudly. Chavvy bloke and his missus on the green bit of the path, woman with buggy coming down about 50 yards away on the black bit so I didn't want to use that. Chav man looked over his shoulder, saw me, and decided not to move.
I slowed down and kept behind them until the push chair had passed, then as I went round them I said "the green bit is for bikes".
To which the chav man shouted back "yeah? Well...fk...UP!"
I was at the top of the hill by this point, which has a right hand bend, so was able to turn my head back to them and join in with his missus' laughter as she pointed at him and broke down into fits of giggles.

Morning!

Lovely morning in LDN, barely a cycle on the road! They all must be getting cleaned after the weekend's efforts. This morning, I took the newly-re-purposed Chunkocycle (see pic - it was free!) and a different route, which included a puffing climb up Wimbledon Hill and getting slightly lost on Putney Heath off-road. Carrying a rucksack full of waterproof for the soaking I'm going to get on the way home!

I noticed there weren't many cycles on my way into LDN either, must of all been lying in after yesterday's efforts, unlike myself who watched it whilst drifting in and out of sleep on the sofa! I'll do some extra commute miles this week to make up for it.

Nice clutch of PRs on your way there too! Are you now targeting 20mph? Or is that a 'bridge too far'?

I don't think I've ever managed to average 19mph, on any ride, anywhere. Well done on doing it for a commute clap (I'm assuming there are showers at work?)

Congrats

When are you going to break 20 wink

Lovely ride this morning, must have been strong wind behind me, as could hold top through the slight incline on the fast section of my route.

Beautiful today, hardly any cars, even the van drivers gave me the lane as the overtook.

Am nearly a stone lighter than back in April

I don't think I've managed 20mph for my commute either.

Most of it is to do with the time of day you go, a mate of mine leaves at 6.30am and averaged 20-22 mph most days, I do the same route at 7.45 and there is no chance, even on school hols unless you arep roperly killing yourself.

Conversely I went out and did a 45 mile loop with a mate on Saturday around Surrey's flatter roads and managed just under 23mph average as there wasn't much traffic.

In all fairness, there was a bit of a breeze behind me today. If I bury myself on the ride home and average 13mph it might tell a story...

On my old route (over Putney Bridge and through Fulham - same as the Ride100 yesterday) 19mph would have been a pipe dream - too much traffic, too many lights. But the route through Wandsworth has long flat stretches where you can maintain a fair old lick with some ease, even without the tailwind.

Yep, 20mph is my next target! I'm just waiting for the next hurricane.

All of this is really quite sad, I admit, but it makes riding to work *so* much more enjoyable. I'm entering my first ever 10 mile TT at Hillingdon on Wednesday and I'm looking forward to seeing how well it translates.

Averaging over 20mph on the commute is difficult mainly due to lights and traffic. School holidays help a lot of course.

Windy and heavy rucksack today, managed to avoid the rain

Anyone else getting tired of the suicidal dither'r?

I'm riding along @ 20 ish mph, nice steady speed, 30 mph road

Car comes to junction ahead wants to pull onto the road I am on and obv has to give priority to me

If they were to pull out straight away, then no issue, they wouldn't impede me and even if they did I would be happy to ease off a bit and let them get on with it...

But no, they sit there and stare at me, dithering, they then wait, then wait, then wait, when I get close they then pull out, but OH NO not in a quick on the ball way, they then dither along accelerating slowly!!

I had the above today, but the driver was so busy on dithering at me, they failed to look the other way and nearly took out a car that was getting closer as they sat at the junction so long bloody dithering!

Did the same 28 mile ride this morning as last week and it took me 11 minutes longer this morning. The wind, combined with a lack-lustre performance anyway meant I just had nothing in the tank, or more specifically - the legs.

Last week I averaged 17.5, this week it was 15 something.

Wouldn't worry about it, the wind is brutal around here at the moment. Part of me is not looking forwards to this evenings leasure ride, I don't expect I'll be going far.

Weather was lovely riding in this morning. I'm now sitting on the 11th floor looking out over Manchester at what can only be described as rain of Biblical proportions - I'm going to get wet, very very wet, on the way home tonight. smile
