The daily "I cycled to work" thread
Discussion
I see no other reason skidding to a halt on a main road than to cause some incident.. Cash for crash against bikes, the new thing!....
Anyway, managed a mile going home before I got the train......
Hopefully get some miles in on sunday!
Any tips for keeping your legs fresh? Couple of easy cycles a week? Every other day?

Aside from the fact that she pulled out in front of you it would appear you were too close.
Err if you had been in a car and gone into the back of somebody who would have been at fault?
Just because you were on a bicycle doesn't give you any divine right.
Did you do to the police. And did they laugh at you?

You are tootling through Fulham, in your 911, when a new Polo pulls out ahead of you, and fails to get anywhere near 'normal' traffic speeds. This causes you to get closer to her than you would normally like to be. So you ease off to increase the gap, as any sensible driver would, whereupon she stands on the middle pedal, causing you to have to anchor up to avoid a collision. Only now your brand new Pirellis are flat spotted, and next weeks 'Ring trip is ruined.
You are...
a) Happy with that. It's entirely predictable and justified to have someone brake test you for no apparent reason.
b) Not too happy, but, hey ho! no one died, I'll get over it.
c) F**k me, that was close. I need new underpants. What the f**k was she up to?
d) You actually want to clasp your hands around her neck and watch the life drain out of her, the stupid cow. Next time she could cause a serious accident, FFS!

I had some moron deliberately try to run me off the road yesterday for no reason whilst commuting back from work, it's not like I antagonised them or anything. Ended up with a scratched wheel from it running against the kerb Any tips for keeping your legs fresh? Couple of easy cycles a week? Every other day?
Another reason why I won't go on public roads in this country without a bike or dash cam. Dunno if it's worth reporting to the police, probably will as if the same happened when I'm driving my car and it caused me to kerb an alloy then I definitely would.

As for keeping your legs fresh at this time of year it's worth getting a turbo trainer, was meant to go on a 50km ride out this afternoon but the weathers scuppered that.

Did you not thump heavily on their window as you went past? I've had similar in the past. Thump on the window frightened the st out of them, then they swung back so much my pedal left a huge scrape on the side of her car. Black Seat Leon it was.HereBeMonsters said:

That's the roundabout I used to get my knee down on my old bike. Not confident in my narrower tyres yet.

Cycle to work opens at my place on Monday. So I went to local bike shop and got a quote for a new Scott Speedster 30 with mudguards and bontranger hard cases! Exciting! Had the chance of using my dads old claud butler but tbh, shiny trumped free bike!

Chain came off the MTB on the steepest hill on the way home on Thursday - seemed to have got jammed in between the gears and the hub of the rear wheel. Couldn't loosen it, especially in the dark and rain, so had to walk home and picked up a cold into the bargain.
Will try and fix it tomorrow. New bike should be here tomorrow, so looking forward to next week. Just picked up some new winter kit.
Anyone know what the best mudguards are for a Boardman CX Comp?

I noticed there are a lot of city and townie riders here. Does anyone else ride through the countryside to get to work?
My eleven and a half mile commute if from North West Norfolk to North East Cambridgeshire is apart from about four miles of "A" road nearly all "B" road and country lanes.
With city and to a lesser extent town cycling I've noticed the number of poor drivers is around 20-30% on country lanes it's more like 60-70% it evens out once you take the volume of traffic into account but apart from a mile and a half of 30 and another mile and a half of 40 zones it's national speed limit all the way for me. Town and City commuters have to deal with more traffic going slowly and country riders have to deal with less traffic going three or four times as fast.
Maybe this is why I have paintball body armor and reflective paint on my eBay watch list.

My 13.5 miles is mostly NSL through Buckinghamshire lanes with the last 5 miles on canal towpath. The roads are narrow though, passing places in parts, which helps keep the speeds down, so I'm not seeing too much bad/impatient driving. My eleven and a half mile commute if from North West Norfolk to North East Cambridgeshire is apart from about four miles of "A" road nearly all "B" road and country lanes.

My 14.5 miles each way is 8 miles on unlit country roads through north Oxfordshire and then 6.5 miles on cycle path next to the A44 and down into Oxford. I do it in 50-55 minutes door to door. If its on the bus, it's 1 hour 20. In the car, it should be 20 minutes in clear traffic, but some days it can be 2 hours if the rush hour traffic round Oxford is at its worse.

Don't envy you in the slightest. Once cycled from Manchester City Centre to Swinton via the A6, dual carriageway and 50mph. A terrifying experience. On Country roads I expect it's a lot worse. My eleven and a half mile commute if from North West Norfolk to North East Cambridgeshire is apart from about four miles of "A" road nearly all "B" road and country lanes.

Have you ever really flat spotted a tyre? I mean really ....
The OP was in the wrong and can't see that or face it. If you are too close you are too close whether in a car, lorry or on a bike.
