The daily "I cycled to work" thread

Too much ice my way so drove, it rained/sleeted all day yesterday and it has all frozen, some of the frost on the roads was ok, but loads of hidden black ice about. Also on the main road near my house a water main has burst which has then frozen/washed off all the grit for about 500m. Proper bum twitching going over it yesterday! All my car doors had frozen shut today so took me ages to even get in the car!
Yesterday was hard work, I didn't mind the cold, but was at best slippery and at worst very icey, then when I was carefully filtering past some stationery traffic on their right, some knob pulled out to try and block me and force me into oncoming cars! Never had that before was quite bemused, sad fking prick.

I'm now begining to think about actually buying a bike to ride to work on. Something simple, with mudguards, no QR wheels, something really cheap and (almost) disposable. At the moment I'm using my mountain bike, but I'd be gutted if it got nicked, and having all the lights, mudguards and crap on it means I tend not to use it at weekends anymore.
This looks tempting;

In and outta work today, and on a day like this it was just a pleasure. The cold bit just a touch and there was a few tiny patches of ice on the way in, but it was mostly just a lovely crisp day. Returning home along the coast with the sun beginning to set was fantastic.
12.5 miles, 58 mins to work, 1:08 for the return. The return has more uphill, so it seems about right to me.

Blimey, £190? It would have to be terrible not to be worth that, surely!
Moved my work bike yesterday to make room to set up my turbo trainer. Soon as i moved it today the rear wheel was making an odd noise. Seems the end of a spoke where it goes into the wheel has dropped back into the wheel or similar. Time to dismantle it this evening and see if I can fix it or whether it's a bike shop job. This stuff only happens when the bike is filthy too!
Found out yesterday that the father of a lad I went to school with was killed a couple of years ago whilst cycling home, apparently was looking down at his gears on what he thought was a clear road and hit the back of a lorry.
Really sad loss, he used to give me lifts home, really nice bloke.

Am I imaginging it or did the warm weather today bring tons of wobblers out of hibernation today?
The way back was as bad as the way in. I can only assume that there ware lots of newcomers out today taking what I can only describe as unconventional lines through the traffic. I had more than one close shave when someone pulled an abrupt lane change on me. Usually before they bumbled through a red.
It's great that more and more people are cycling through London these days but on a purely selfish tip I was missing the Arctic chill today....
