I've quite enjoyed biking to work for the past few days. There has been wind, but a fairly steady one, rather than gusts. It's been cooler (still mild for November), but dry or only lightly raining during the rides so I've been wearing my soft shell jacket and not getting all sweaty.

Yellow warning of wind again this afternoon, think I'll use the car, don't fancy riding in silly wind again! 94miles done this week so far

I wouldn't be so sure. Looking at the forecast the weekend is set to drop considerably (lows of -3 here in Southampton) yet rise back up again next week.

Quite. I wouldn't fit studded tyres or go into hibernation just yet.

The people on the Winter Tyres thread might be getting all excited about an impending light frost for a day or two, but we must all remember that we live in the maritime UK on the NE seaboard of the Atlantic, not Siberia.

I'm working in Holland for 3 months and my colleagues found me a bike on my first day (took 4 days to get a computer login). Only about 4km each way but I'm quite enjoying cycle commuting and thinking I really should do it when I'm back in the UK. My UK commute would be about 9 miles, which I'm thinking is probably going to be a bit too far to just wear my work clothes as I'm likely to get a bit hotter and sweatier, so:

Do you cycle commuters:
  • cycle in your work clothes?
  • go in via another method once a week and leave clothes at work?
  • have luggage that will take a change of clothes?
Annoyingly we don't have showers at work, although we should be moving buildings next year and it's something several people have requested.

Everyone in Holland rides very upright bikes, which look very comfortable but I'm not sure how they'd be on hills, anyone on a fairly upright hybrid?

Had a couple of close shaves with unlit pedestrians on cycle paths but my new 700 lumen light arrives today.

9 is too far for normal clothes. I do 10.5 and wear lycra each day, not because I have a random fetish for it, but because its the best thing for the job.

I take a bag with stuff in as and when I need it, plus drive in occasionally and stock up with bits and bobs. Its really no bother.

I work in a workshop environment, so being clean and fresh isn't a must, I wouldn't fit in if I was all clean and non smelly.
I wear cycling kit, 16 miles each way, I keep emergency clothes at work just in case, but bring stuff in every day.

265.7 kms and 1622m since Monday morning just commuting with small deviations to get some extra climbing in, been a good week and first full 5 days I've managed for a while due to travel and events. Weekend away travelling, so need to do the same next week.....

I keep a suit, winter coat, belt, shoes, towel and toiletries at the office permanently. Every so often I have to drive in so bring 5 shirts, undies and socks in. If not I've got a long rucksack which will fit 4 shirts rolled up. I do 8 miles each way and I would be way too sweaty to wear my work clothes to cycle in.

I have a shower, but if one's not available I believe Muc-off dry shower is meant to be ok.

This is all you need to know, dont over think it, also read the thread recently about lack of showers....

Well it was certainly pretty fresh this morning on the south coast. Frost everywhere so thought I'd better eat a bit of porridge for some internal heat before hitting the road. The first 5 mins were pretty cold on the face (to the point where my teeth felt like I'd been eating ice cream!) but soon after that I warmed up. Lovely morning to be on the bike. Arrived at work just before sunrise so can now admire that out of the window.

I think tomorrow will be a woolly hat day, rather cold ears by the time I got to work today.

Saw someone wearing a cycle helmet this morning, first one I've seen in 2 months in Holland, he was probably a Brit.

Below freezing when I set off - unusual for zone 2 London. Added a base layer and went up a grade on the jacket.

Bracing to start but fine once I was going.

Lovely morning to be out today. I managed to stay warm too, Planet X Winter Bibs:

http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CLPXESWBT/planet-x-ec...

First time in them this morning, and kept my legs nice and warm. (They felt a bit weird on the legs, and don't cling as nicely as normal lycra.) I think I'll stick to normal bibs and leggings for non-frosty mornings, but they work for when it's properly cold.
