Interesting ride home last night. I got hit on the ear by something rather hard. I have no idea what hit me - I'm guessing someone threw something out of the darkness from the pavement, but there were no cheers after securing a direct hit aand by the time I'd stopped and gone back I couldn't see any likely suspects nor any potential projectiles. I then realised that throwing unfounded accusations around in deepest Moss Side would be unlikely to get me anywhere I set off home.
fk me it hurt though, still hurts now in fact.

Commute in at -2 was generally OK after the initial shock/wind chill. I swear my eyes were hurting in the first quarter of a mile then my face felt like it was being pulled off.
Thick Sealskinx socks plus light over shoes did the trick for my feet.
Hands were ok (I guess the lack of wind helped).
I ended up with three wicking layers up top plus Gore shell. Toasty but not sweaty.
And found my morino head warmer. Makes me look like very off but keeps the heat in.
Legs were rubbish, though. Not enough commuting/running/swimming at the moment.

You need a proper neck scarf / baraclava. My face was fine at -4, just couldn't keep my hands warm at all.Thick Sealskinx socks plus light over shoes did the trick for my feet.

Ride harder, I am still using my de-feet gloves, fine for an hour or two commute where pushing on (I did say in another thread they were not up to cold temps, but actually I think for shorter rides they have surprised me).
To all quoting temps using Garmin, don't bother they read 2-3 deg out, usually too low.
Gritted all the way for me (maybe bar a bit of Richmond Park).

Not going to work but considering a chaingang tonight, forecast is -4.
Is this sensible or should I just stick to a well gritted loop as the normal CG loop goes a bit off the beaten path of gritters.
I'd stick to roads that are a at least reasonably well used. Not worth the risk to be honest.... In my opinion. Is this sensible or should I just stick to a well gritted loop as the normal CG loop goes a bit off the beaten path of gritters.
Cycling into work this morning there were some patches of road which were very icy around the edges.... Did make me ride a few inches closer to the middle of the road than normal.

So I hit a stupid ped who walked out on me, then as I slowed just stopped dead, I came to almost a halt, tangled with her handbag and went down, all fine but my right ankle got twisted right round as I don't think it unclipped, I limped 15 miles home barely using that leg, I nearly died of cold, clearly riding around at 150w requires more clothing (so can sympathise with the above, those gloves were USELESS at that level of power, I was generating almost no heat). Ankle really painful and swelling up. All because some wandered out into my path while checking her phone

Sorry to hear this, it's so frustrating. Once you're home get a bag of frozen peas or ice pack or whatever on that ankle asap, of it's bad enough consider anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen. Hopefully nothing too bad but if it's swollen already it's worth limiting too much inflammation. Just a quick question.... Is the swelling soft or hard? Hopefully soft
Did you get my PM a couple of days ago? I sent one, but nor a I get a copy sent to my email address but didn't... So not sure if it got sent or not.
Cheers

Soft yes!
No PM from you...?
Peas on it now, though probably 45 mins in -1 was good for it
Bugger, I'll try again tonight or tomorrow. No PM from you...?

Soft swelling is good.... If it swells up quickly and is firm, it means (more often than not) the swelling is inside a joint, rather than around it, and that cam be bad news.
Hope it feels better soon and will ping you another pm and hope it works. Wasn't anything too important anyway!
Cheers
edit - tried sending again, and it says a copy has also been sent to me, but I haven't got one, reading in the "website feedback" section, it appears the PM service is currently broken

You can wrap up warm but are you not worried about coming off on the ice? Unless all your routes are gritted of course.
Steve
This is my biggest concern and not without good reason. A lad at work came off his bike commuting on Friday morning. Going down a hill he hit a patch of ice and came off. He knocked himself out and was helped out by the next passing car. Now he's got concussion and a broken hand. It could have been much worse.Steve
I cycled in today but only because I knew it was 100% clear. Once you hit ice you are going to fall off, it's must a matter of how much it is going to hurt.
Lots of ice that looked like frozen slush this morning, took it a bit steady, abut still managed the commute in a normal-ish time.
I have some long leg Planet X bibs, for deep winter, and whilst they work, they're not that comfortable. I'll save them for when it's properly cold I think.

Back up to 1-2 degrees and rain this morning. The Canadians are back in short sleeved shirts (one of them even had a hat on the other day, it must have been cold) so it's officially warm.
Unfortunately I was still expecting it to be colder and wore too many clothes on the ride in the morning.
