I'm changing job soon from a site with plenty of shower facilities to one with a single shower and plenty of people cycling in... I suspect I might join the gym nearest work too for guaranteed shower access!Steve
So, as this is my last working day in March, I managed to cycle to work 12 times this month. I hadn't cycled since August last year.
Its getting easier and quicker each day. On the way to work on the big bridge I can now go up it in second gear easily but still in first on the way home.
I am clearly much fitter than I was, which is a great thing.
I'm still an 18 stone fat b
d and the cycling makes me eat more, this is still an issue but I'm working on it.
My bike is st. It weighs a ton. Its got a stand and a luggage rack FFS. It won't go in top gear. Maybe later in summer I'll treat myself to a new bike.

The bike you ride is so important IMHO. Having something you dont enjoy and doesn't do the job only hinders your will. buy something decent and the Itchen Bridge will be your bIts getting easier and quicker each day. Well done so far and you'll be fit as a fiddle in no time.

You learnt to love the constant wind in the Netherlands though .... ?3.5 days into my first full week of the year. With travel and agenda over the last 3mths the most I've managed in 1 week is 3 rides. will be good to have 200kms in the bag before the weekend - although will be driving at Spa for 2 days so no riding. Every cloud has a silver lining....

I work west of Leiden and ride in across the fields from Wassenaar, and like most depending on the wind direction this can be great or an absolute killer with no shelter.To make my life just a bit more frustrating, aligned to our sustainability agenda, work has installed 4 of the giant wind turbines so popular in the Netherlands, just by the car park, to confront you as you go to the bike racks. Just to compound your misery on your way home (especially tonight) with the biggest possible indicator of which way the wind is blowing before your ride home. Tonight I'm riding alongside the Vleit river down to Voorburg and the giant windmill is happily spinning around in the face of the wind blowing directly head on for my ride to Voorburg. Great, thanks.
So not only does it do a good job of confirming the direction, the speed of the damned thing also has a visceral effect on your mood as it determines how unpleasant the next hour or so could be.... At least it confirms as I turn right at the Haag back up the 44 to Wassenaar it should be on my back!
It's never stopped turning since the day they installed it!
Possibly my worst commuting day of the last five years today!
Started out nicely... dry, sunny weather, temperature just right, slight tail wind... then two punctures on the way in.
The way out was just horrible! Gusty headwind the whole way, driving the pouring rain and occasional hail into my face hard enough that my lips have only just about stopped stinging!

Having changed jobs a fortnight ago, and having just picked up a genesis day one alfine di2 for a bargain it was time to join you guys commuting, 19 miles each way, with a start in the dark with frost covered roads was a good wake up, then the ride home this evening was in glorious sunshine, but with more traffic, but I'm probably spoilt with the first 9 miles this morning I didn't see another person or vehicle.
