It took me 6 months to get up the big hill on the way home when I first started riding.

Nope - I'm nervously watching the dark skies too. Missed the rain this morning, but suspect I wont this afternoon. So much standing water and leaves this morning too.
As an aside - how often to people get their bikes 'serviced'? I gave mine a good clean at the weekend and had a go at degreasing and re-lubing the chain which made it run better.
Chap at work says to buy a chain measuring tool and to replace my chain pretty regularly - do other people do this? I do about 120 miles a week, so dont want to be stranded half way in if I can avoid it!

I had to cycle into town today to collect a part to get my Alfa Spider back on the road. On the way back there was a truck waiting to get out of a junction, blocking the cycle lane. He backed up a bit so I could get by so further up the road I stopped traffic so he could get out.

Got absolutely frikking drenched this morning, although full wets (which I've never done before) stopped the rain but started the sweats. Lesser of two evils.
Also forgot to previously replace my emergency socks at work so had to be all bohemian and not wear socks with my shoes while they dried on the radiator.
Looking dry for the journey home but image there will be loads of standing water to contend with.

The rain was epic this morning. Waterproof trousers and jacket kept me mostly dry but my gloves and shoes were another matter. Thank God for emergency work socks!

I was hit full on by a 6 foot bow wave last night from an idiot who clearly though he was in the Lombard RAC rally. Luckily I'm very tall, so it was only for my chest down, but I was drenched.
This morning was relatively pleasant, the dehumidifier pretty much dried my shoes overnight.

I have 36 miles round trip to work which I ride pretty much every day in the summer and 3-4 times a week through the winter. I estimate about £5/day in fuel and it costs £5.60 a day to park. So lets call it £50/week.
For the 5 years previous to this job I was in London and commuted that daily. Often I'd split it with the train and depending on the station I chose to get off at I'd have either 15 miles each way or 10 miles each way. In the summer I would normally ride the whole way 5 days a week and let me tell you, it works wonders for your fitness. Also, door to door was considerably quicker on the bike, especially when the Olympics was on as half my route was the closed road Olympic route....
My public transport alternative option to the current job is pretty much impossible as I'm traversing all the main rail lines and hence the train route would be a big zigzag. Not to mention It would cost a fortune. Public transport into London, where I expect to be heading back to in the new year, was a nightmare as I have a 2 mile walk to the station and a 2 mile walk, or slower than walking bus ride, the other end. Not to mention a cost of circa £3.2k per year.....!
Some days I don't always feel up for it, but once out the door it's usually fine. The smug factor is massive.
