Did my 9 1/2 mile cycle this morning, though on my MTB rather than my road bike (albeit a very old one) - bit of a struggle, given most of it is up and down all the way, a bit like a mini Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

First commute in on MTB this morning, only 12 miles each way via country lanes and some sandy tracks (Farnham to Guildford). It can take the same time in the car and this journey was considerably more relaxing, no traffic and just a few bunnies with death wishes. Downside is that there are no showers at work and it wasnt muddy until the last puddle. Ready for a nap.

Lets see how long I can keep it going for - 15kg to lose!

Good effort! You're going to have to see if you can get baby wipes, or something similar, delivered in bulk to work. Either that or the "French Shower":

Well, we're into our new offices and I've cycled in the last 2 days. We get to park our bikes in a nice secure loading bay with CCTV which is good news. The shower room is good, however, there's a radiator in the small room that's permenantly on, with no apparent means of turning it off, plus the steam extraction is non-existent. It's like a sauna when you step into the room, and when you've finished your shower it's like a steam room - if it wasn't so uncomfortable it would be quite funny. Getting dressed into a suit and shirt whilst dripping wet is not very pleasant.

There are 5 of us who cycle or run to the office and if the building manager hasn't got it turned off by the end of the week I suspect somebody will be ripping it off the wall.

Had one of them yesterday morning. Met up with another roadie with about six miles still to do and we drafted one another all the way to work. Just how a fast ride in the country should be. smile
As I rolled onto the cycle path last night I heard another bike behind me. I've not ridden that section quite that fast for a while....

Question:

Do all of your employers provide you with shower facilities?

Ours doesn't (well there is but it's for the board) so cycling into work is a bit of a no-no!

I worked out that I can save £6.50 per day if I cycle into work.

When I last worked somewhere without shower facilities, I kept a wash kit at my desk and used the disabled facilities to have a sink-wash after cycling in.

I'd raise it with your HR people about getting access to the shower facilities - you can make all sorts of environmental arguments to appease the poor board members who might have to share their facilities wink

Yes, but primarily because we work in a large city centre office building that has shared shower facilities - there are 5 shower rooms in our 11 storey building.

However, my firm is pretty good and there's no way we'd have taken space in a building that did not have shower facilities. 25% of the people in my office use the showers - some cycle to work, some run to work and some do fitness training first thing in the morning.

Have you tried running the shower on cold after you have used it, at our work I leave the shower running for a couple of minutes on cold and positioned so it creates a breeze of cool air / spray

Yep - it's an electric shower and for some strange reason it won't run cold - the coldest it gets to is lukewarm.

Fair enough, at least the upside is you don't forget that you left it on cold and jump in to a frezzing shower and nearly stack it on the floor in shock with a load of people 5 foot from the shower room like in my office !

Yes, pretty lucky really - five showers and sinks, lockers and they provide fresh towels !

Lovely ride in this morning, it's around 40k one way and in for a new PB 1h 4 mins, to be fair all my junctions were clear today, which is worth a bit, and very little wind.

However I reckon I gained about 2 - 3 minutes by putting my tyres up to 90psi - was running them on about 50psi - mostly because I had a st pump, but invested in a track pump with a gauge....(now need to cycle in 4 more times to break even)

Another bit of shiny kit that ensures that you *never* really save money.

I ride in every day. It's only four miles so not even horrendous weather will put me off. Other option is to drive, but with parking costing over £10/day I've never even considered it.

Two showers at mine, which is enough. Bit sauna ish but ok.

In fact what's more annoying is I've got nowhere to hang up the Lycra and towel during the day..,

We've got 5 showers in our locker room, plus at least 2 more showers for each sex on every other floor. God only knows why we're so over-endowed with them!

I doubt anyone ever uses any of the ones not in the locker rooms.

That's fairly hoofing along, well done! If you're on a road bike, the difference between 50psi and 110psi is very noticeable.

I have a choie of 4 showers, get free towels, and have somewhere to hang kit to dry. All I need now is for them to let me park the bike in the bike room, and I'll be laughing.

I think you have some very environmentally friendly people at your place of work. Not only are they saving by cycling in, but saving water as well. Very admirable.

New PB this morning. 14miles (Bexley to St Pauls) in 46mins (as I stop for lights quite happy with an average 17mph). And a new V Max drafting a van down Shooters Hill.

I seem to be able to hold 22mph+ on the straights now, so in "my" man-maths I'm due a pair of Cosmic Carbones as a special treat (anyone know good deals?).
