I had my first go at riding to work this morning. I already knew the safest routes wouldn't be suitable for my road bike so, until my cyclocross bike on C2W turns up, I borrowed my father-in-law's MTB. Needless to say there were a few learning points. Firstly don't overdress. I definitely need some 'intermediate' gloves as my hands were boiling in these Aldi winter gloves and my jacket was a bit too much too. I have an alternate for each on the way home thankfully. The route is cycle route 45 which is mostly on tarmac covered with wet leaves or compacted gravel. I can cut off the muddy section of this by taking another route. Bar 100m this is also off the road and will be better lit than the muddy old railway line. Lets see if I make it home now!
Go and get some cheap base layers and a fluoro shell at Aldi/Decathalon/Tresspass etc and layer up and down as appropriate.

Bit chilly on the face this morning, but a compression layer and a pullover was a bit warm on the body. I've been using the winter gloves, but I feel the cold quick quickly in my hands (not a wuss, honest!)

Someone tries to undertake you:
- Hold your line knowing there is some road furniture coming up and the guy who's partially trying to undertake is either going to have to brake or try and barge you out the way; or
- Move out and let him in underneath you?

Ideally position yourself sufficiently in advance so that they don't have to make a choice. smile

Bellend of the day award goes to

This guy who hopped of the kerb forcing me to swerve out of the way. Didnt look at all, I told him to watch where he was going and that I almost hit him (politely I might add) I was then told to fk off!

next set of lights he is back on the kerb jumps down off the kerb and runs a red light.

OK this morning but got damn wet last night on the ride home and 3 people tried to kill me. First was a driver who shot straight out of a side turning in Haringay. How I missed him I don't know, actually stood up on my front wheel I braked that hard.

The second were 2 giggling school girls in wood Green who decided to run in front of me, saw me to late and then proceeded to do a push me pull me in the middle of the road as they didnt know which way to run whilst I skidded to a halt trying to guess which way they would go.

Bit chillers this morning, made hard work it it. Legs a bit stiff all day.

The got on the bike to come home in the dark and I felt like invading a small country on my own! Romped it!

Bit of a shocker tonight.
Chilly as anything this morning at 7am and again tonight as I didn't leave work till nearly 7pm.
Arrived home after 8 miles and realised my phone was no longer in my pocket.
Cycled 4 miles back towards work and luckily found it across a cycle path albeit with a smashed screen!

Be careful out there guys, had a stick fly up and get caught between my wheel and my chain on the SS, wheel locked and threw me off, major road rash up my arm shoulder arse and leg.

Crumbs - ouch! Bad luck and all that....

This morning:

Fleecy bibs (best money I have ever spent, ever, I have decided)
The thick base layer
Long sleeve jersey
Flouro waterproof jacket
Gloves
Thick merino socks
Another pair of socks
Thick neoprene foot covers.

I have no more clothes left to put on.

Left all three pairs of full gloves in Cheltenham. I've been in fingerless all week. My fingers are only just defrosting now!
