ED209 said: This if you can afford it, I sold my 2009 one recently for £280 and other than a new casette due to normal wear it was faultless despite being abused on red/black trails all over the country many times. Ditto, I took mine for a ride with the local MTB club on Tuesday, as expected they where all sporting the latest 29er and/or full sus XC bikes at least 5x the price of my old Rockhopper, to their credit no one raised an eyebrow at my rim brakes and unmodded bike and I managed to keep up just fine. FWIW my LBS always has a couple of serviced 2nd hand bikes out back, might be worth asking yours if they have anything, expect to pay much less than the new price for bikes almost as good as new- the shine wears off quickly so why pay extra for it?

ETA: price negotiable around the £300 mark... before it goes on the fleabay.. cost £1150 I could be interested in this, Can u supply a bit more info regarding condition ? where abouts are you located? my email is dominickerry@yahoo.co.uk Me too! have sent you an email, have been looking for a stumpjumper HT for a while now.

Brew said: I'm about to advertise my 2011 Specialized Rockhopper (19 inch) barely used. Was looking for £450, Is it a Comp? I just sold my 2011 Comp in shop floor condition for £600 through Ebay (before end of auction). OP for £300 I would be looking on Ebay for Hardrocks 2010 / 2011.

I would suggest defiantly secondhand, especially as you may decide to upgrade soon if you really get into it, or give up and want to sell up. At least you won't loose much, but you will gain knowledge about what you want / need and what is a waste of time. I just bought an Orange Hardtail for little money. OK, it hasn't got disk brakes. It isn't pristine, but it is nice and light, well made, British and I love it. A set of Furious Freds for hard trail and road and off I go. If I really love cycling, I can upgrade getting my money back on the Orange.

Another advocate for second hand - pinkbike is a wonderful resource for used bikes. With your budget look for a used hard tail purchased by the sort echo had to have "the gear" when accompanying their offspring along the canal path! Get a friend who knows their onions to help you choose, go for something with good forks / crank etc - ideally something with a light owner and not too old (bike, not owner!).
If you get hooked you can upgrade, or sell and replace. Then when your budget goes up you can buy a current MY bike when the following year models come out - good deals galore!
Get one purchased and get involved - you won't look back!
